This feels like a recounting of childhood trauma that hasn’t been fully processed, which means it has a raw and sometimes uncomfortable “sense of humor” that can scan oddly. Still, the level of craft on display is remarkable, and the emotions expressed are worthy and scan as fully sincere. The direction remains fluid and rhythmic even as the circumstances of the film essentially curtail it to taking place inside one small room. And again, there is that animate joy suffusing even very dark domestic scenes.
