Based upon true incidents, its a well made hostage thriller that gets handled in a grounded and realistic manner, while conveying its intended socio political statements convincingly without over-dramatization. It effectively depicts the sad state of our conditioned administrative system and the continuing injustice, apathy towards the marginalized members by diluting the tribal laws and denying basic democratic rights. The strong performances and technical values power it further. While the movie has his shortcomings, its sincere effort to raise awareness in making the voice of the unheard reach out further, make it definitely worthy of your time.
This is how you make real-life incident based movies with political bearings, nail-biting. This is how you stand by the wronged without diluting the gravity of the injustice they face. This is how you use political nuances in film. Director Kamal KM not only successfully injects powerful after-thoughts in its audience, but also rips naked the ruling political party's (CPIM) and opposition's hypocrisy (pointing fingers at both sides was a diplomatic move though) when it comes to Adivasi populace since time immemorial. In the name of tweaking wildlife protection acts, everything that was theirs was taken away from them with no act of conscience. If that doesn't stir revolution and protests what else will?
Based on a real-time incident that…
Does not hold any real significance or value in the course of journey for malayalam cinema, Pada is quite anarchist in its tendencies; nostalgically reviving the flair of radical leftist politics emerged during the post-emergency period. The cultural activities conducted by janakeeya samskarika vedi by the influence of Chinese cultural revolution - in the sphere of cinema, especially though the films of John Abraham, PA Bakker etc. Pada is merely continuum of this pre-existing ideological consensus cloaked in the superficial idea of, quoting mao, revolution as pool party.
Kamal's effort is however not entirely dismissable as he does not imposter any Ayyankalist (the title doesn't even try to appropriate or mythologize like say for example Jai Bhim) or Ambedkarite politics,…
Pada is an admirable cinematic recreation of an crucial sociological event etched in the history of Kerala. This is a tale that is outside the realm of the ordinary, and the film maker, with his sharp observation and remarkable focus transforms it into a haunting account of the struggle for survival of a populace that often remains invisible to the rest of the world. Apart from getting the casting right, Kamal KM manages to sustain the momentum throughout, without adding fictional bits to the narrative. The running time of two hours also works for it. Building tension moment by moment and then maintaining it for two whole hours of a movie has to be an art. In Pada, there is…
One of the finest films made with such a perfect casting and a strong content narrated with the most realistic approach.
I'm glad this movie exists.
Its sad thinking that even after like 25 years after such a bold act avarku oru matavum vanatillanu, eppo Secretariat alel Collectorate poyalum avarude samrapandal kanam.
Pada (2022) by Kamal KM is an absolute cracker of a hard hitting political statement. Based on true events surrounding a hostage drama executed by 'Ayyankali Pada' activists in the backdrop of the infamous yet unanimously passed amended bill of the Adivasi Land Act in 1996 by the EK Nayanar led Left Democratic Front (LDF), it's a spellbinding film that hits all the right notes with excellent performances from the whole ensemble. Even if the makers aren't really interested in taking names, especially of EK Nayanar (in spite of featuring the character of an uncannily similar Chief Minister), it was content to see them openly acknowledging KR Gowriamma's sole resistance against the atrocities committed against Adivasis by both the left…
Watching the movie didn't rile me up like a movie like this would. I thought movies like this should and is the only way to go about it but I think it understands where it stands with respect to what it is showing and I really appreciate that. It feels like a more mature way of going about something. I feel more mature for realising that.
This movie shows an incident and proceeds to end afterwards.
I wish I could articulate my thoughts as simply as this movie did its.
I now have found hope in political movies…politics is not about following something that a party or belief tells u to follow…it’s all about justice and injustice…
Pada is a very simple movie…it’s not at all in your face, but more over it tries to place certain things in front of you, you have the option to decide…
Also the usual way for such a movie would be to portrait characters as good or bad…ithil agene onum ila…everyone is just a normal person…the actions are a result of the circumstances.
Even though it’s been so many years, since the actual event took place, the issue is still on going…It’s disappointing to realize that.
P.S: 👏 for you know who, who hasn’t died in two movies back to back…😉😂
