Nikyatu Jusu’s NANNY… wow. An unreal Anna Diop, lush cinematography by Rina Yang, and devastating use of folktales by Jusu. Such a smart film about the exploitation of African immigrant mothers, and how often they’re excluded from the American dream. People need to see this movie, and do the work it demands. It’s worth it.
It’s definitely gonna have to sink in over time but holy shit…what a debut. The story was told beautifully, the movie looks stunning and Anna Diop is incredibly captivating. I was genuinely creeped out many times. Definitely one of the better movies I’ve seen at Sundance this year.
immigrant mothers are just so strong and go through so many difficulties and anxieties trying to build a better life for their children - I’m glad this movie shows that
I enjoyed the beautiful look of this film a lot and the drama was engaging but the supernatural/horror aspects were a bit too vague and the end was abrupt.
absolutely loved all of the visuals, but what the hell? the writing was lacking, the ending was rushed, and honestly, all of the horror bits felt so out of place. i really didn't find this engaging at all. take out the few bad dreams and hallucinations, and all you've got is a surface level drama. this could've been such a great psychological film, but i'm left feeling disappointed.
I can't complain about the performances, or should I say the performance because Anna goddess Diop carried the whole movie on her back, and the plot isn't bad, but the pace… I get they were trying to build the atmosphere at first but maybe they went too far with it, even for a slow burn. It's not a bad film though but I think I would have like it even more if it was you know, not that slow.
there’s a moment when rose (the kid aisha takes care of) is running around screaming and aisha briefly watches her pass with the exhausted death glare of an overworked, underpaid nanny and i really felt seen
What even was this movie? It is so uneven in tone, has no idea what kind of movie it’s trying to be whatsoever. If it had stuck to one vibe it may have been redeemable but as is it’s a mish mash off too many things that all equal nothing.
"How do you use your rage? Is it your superpower or your kryptonite?"

Watch your own fucking kids!
Nanny is a really pretty movie with great sound design and a super slow pace that allows you to soak up vibe after vibe. Anna Diop is a fucking star, really carrying a character that, based on the writing, could be open to many interpretations and feels. I love how the film explores the home and professional lives of care-workers in a way that thoughtfully address so many important issues but also manages to nail that hint of horror, creating a light horror feel that I appreciated. Love that ending!
Good stuff.
I went into Nanny for Anna Diop and the horror element and I certainly got that, along with a heavy story about motherhood that left my jaw dropped by the end. Gorgeous no matter which way you look at it; the use of color and the rising tension and the climate and the atmosphere. Such a fucking stun of a debut. Packs a heavy punch with a ton of nuance and plays very unique as a genre film -- honestly viewed this in a more psychological sense but those dark supernatural aspects are still there. It takes its time to get going, but the performances are so fucking rich, and I didn't mind that it was a slow burn. Wasn't expecting to see Michelle Monaghan or Sinqua Walls either, which was a treat as a fan of their previous work. Mind is blown.
