Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay - Nominees

The Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, introduced in 1940 at the 13th Academy Awards, is presented annually for the best achievement in writing of a screenplay not based upon previously published material for a film from the previous year.

Beginning in 1957 at the 29th Academy Awards this category was merged with the Academy Award for Best Story. For the 21st Academy Awards the award was consolidated into a singular Best Screenplay award.
