This is a list of period films organized by the year or decade they were set in. Within each year they are organized oldest to newest by release date.

I have tried to limit this list to live action period pieces. I have included films with fantasy and horror elements but excluded films that are animated. Films that fall into a grey area (for example set historically but not costumed historically) I simply make a decision on but could probably be swayed by various arguments.

Nelly (2016) is the film in this list set closest to the present. Any films following that have been added but not yet arranged.

Please recommend any films I have missed, especially ones set and made outside of England and America!
