Is this technically a 4.5 star movie? No, if I’m honest it’s got some glaring issues and I should probably give it a 3.5 at best. But did I love it on a 4.5 star level? 100%!! Maybe even a 5 star level because I’m literally rewatching it now.
I was super excited for this because it’s a haunted house movie and because I love Elisha Cuthbert on a borderline unhealthy level. I didn’t read anything else about it so going in blind once again helped I think.

Elisha Cuthbert returns to horror after a 15 year hiatus, last appearing in the trashy Captivity (2007) and the House of Wax remake (which is becoming a bit of a cult classic). It’s fitting that she comes back to the genre for a project that focuses on parental fears, considering she now has a child of her own.
Although it’s nice to see her back, Brendan Muldowney’s Shudder original is a fairly underwhelming slow burn. The depth by the end doesn’t quite match your lofty expectations with the highbrow concepts that it initially sets up. But it does deliver on enough old fashioned tension and utilization of dark space to make it an atmospheric delight. And the bleak ending…
A concept that sounds really cool, a cellar door that leads into a a hell dimension, this couldve been a over the top, fun sam raimi type horror but was just dull. It was predictable, bland and unintentionally funny. a waste of a good idea.

Mannn I don't like hating on Shudder as it's the streaming service for horror fans but fuck me, most of the shudder releases so far in 2022 have been duds. This had some solid haunted house atmosphere. More counting than necessary. I hate math. Always have so that was rather scary. Was nice to see Elisha Cuthbert again granted I didn't care about her character or any of the characters. The effects were great I think...they were so brief though.
An effectively creepy Irish haunted house horror that absolutely nails the location and atmosphere, it’s just a shame that the overall story doesn’t quite live up to it. Right from the beginning, it plays out like every other haunted house film and it's really obvious it's adapted from a short film. It feels like it has to pad out its already short runtime and the sheer stupidity on display here is also astounding, like it's instilled in every single character. That said, there's some genuinely creepy moments and it manages to build some decent tension. The first couple of acts are average at best but the film really delivers in the third act.
