There are so many things I noticed and want to talk about:
1. At one point in the film Bhumi says ' हम शहर से कितने दूर हैं ' when they move into a new house. (Talking ofcourse about the house and themselves).
After I don't know how long, I saw a film in which the writing is so subtle, light on its feet and doesn't burden itself with moral responsibilities too much. Its a regular story, told so effectively by nuanced writing.
2. The gay romance track is sung entirely in a male voice. The lesbian romance track is sung entirely in a female voice.
3. Naam? Anaam. Title? Titler. What a subtle and beautiful way of dismissing binaries,…
everyone's criticizing this movie bc it's corny but that's exactly what we need!!!!! more cliche cringy movies but queer. it didn't shy away from uncomfortable moments and truths that come with being queer, being desi, and queerness in desi culture. it may not be the best movie ever but it achieved what it was designed to do, and created a good foundation for queer bollywood movies which may follow. and also i cried so so much there's like tears in my eyes as i type not even joking
While entering into the film i knew the film is about homosexuality and was afraid of the representation because of history of bollywood but when u show a gay character a policeman and working out in gym and a lesbian character a PT teacher you know the makers are already trying to break the stereotypes in first five mins even if it's in minor way but my goodness I wasn't expecting this film to moved me in substantial way. We need films like this which directly wanna have the conversation to Indian families and letting them know "it's ok if your loved one is part of the LGBTQ+ community", at the end of the day it's all about spreading love…
there's a scene towards the ending of the film that just encapsulates the meaning of the word SOLIDARITY. a moment of bittersweet emotion, shared between two friends, two members of a COMMUNITY. it stands out easily as the film's best scene and what makes badhaai do work.
never did i think, so early in my life would i see a mainstream bollywood movie acknowledging lavender marriage, compulsory heterosexuality, heteronormativity, age gaps in gay relationships, co-habitation and so much more about the queer experience. this is the first time i have seen a lesbian woman call herself that in a mainstream film for heaven's sake! (even reviews of this film call her 'gay woman',,, lesbian is not a bad word!). badhaai…
Lavender marriage where two homosexuals agree to be married to have the same rights given to straights while hiding who they are makes me both happy and sad. It makes me happy because society takes everything from us but we still learn how to survive and fit in. If straights don't have your back, your fellow gays do. It makes me sad because we go in extreme hiding just so we cannot be rejected by our very own family. We'd rather lock ourselves in the closet if telling our truth means losing everything; losing everyone we love.
I love films like this that give us hope. I hope that like in this one, after some time, people will get to realize we're normal after all. We're not different. We also wanna live without being forced to do things we don't want to. That without any fear, we can love whoever we wanna love.
He's gay, she's lesbian, and their marriage—together with his boyfriend and her girlfriend—will change your perspective in love.
Sumi and Rimjhim's meet-cute is one of the best and sexiest meet-cutes in cinema, period.
(PS: When was the last time a film gave us not one, but THREE terrific meet-cute scenes?)
(PPS: Subtitled this film in English - so I am technically part of the crew, though this is my unbiased reaction to the film. I don't love / like most films I subtitle and don't rate or review those either, but this was something special. :')
