I needed this list to sort To Catch a Killer (2023), but in making it I was surprised by how many films I watched that I didn't consider film noir were labeled noir in the reference lists (Neo-Noir, Noir, Nordic Noir). My list is vaguely ranked including by 1) whether it adds something to the way I look at it to consider it in relation to the genre's expectations and then a bit by 2) quality. "The Killing". below, stands in for Forbrydelsen—not a limited series, sadly, so it's not in the database, but an absolute highlight in film and television so I couldn't lead it out. There are a few plugs like that (The Bridge = Bron/Brœn).
It was strange to see my old favorite, L'Avventura, treated as Italian film noir, but I find that take interesting, so I've included it.
