Criterion Channel's Hawaii Shorts
Sets up an interesting dynamic, I would like to see more
The first time I watched this I didn’t finish it and had no intentions of finishing it. I misread the scene as something amateur and pretentious, if not a competent short. But my girlfriend wanted to check it out, and I’m glad I saw the whole thing with her. The ending suddenly contextualizes all of those silences with an added weight. And it feels so naturalistic too. It feels like something everyone has seen at some point. And the cinematography and production design is great. This is what I am excited to see more of coming from Hawaii there’s a lot of talented and creative people here so I know big things are coming soon.
The only one of Criterion’s Hawai’i Shorts that feels like a pilot, a proof of concept for a longer film. The “slice of life” approach had me hooked and wanting to know more about Kainoa and his journey. Amidst a group of hyper-stylized, high concept short films, this one landed beautifully and I was sad when it ended
Solid little conversation about making amends and cultural heritage. Looks and sounds very much like a demo reel for later work but I mean I’m in the exact same boat so more power to them. Props to the location scout for finding this spot.
I love the criterion channel cuz I can just watch short films I don’t really like very much but they’re so short I just finish them anyway
Showcases a lot of emotions and drama in less than 10 minutes, could be a great feature film.
