everything under occupation becomes precarious, under threat, even your own dignity, the already dangerous act of love. but there comes a point where you’ve nothing to lose because you were there when the walls came up, in jail overnight, trying to protect the parts of you that are yours, locking them behind closed doors, still remaining, steadfast, like a god made of copper. your friend got on a ship at the break of dawn without saying goodbye. you stay, awaiting the morning light.

my heart aches for Gaza. this isn’t a difficult film if you have a hard time with heavier content - it’s under watched wholesome goodness just begging you to press play.

It’s got Marcia from Succession and a 2500 year old bronze dildo. So yeah, pretty much the perfect film.

Old people cinema barely ever disappoints. A charming, sweet, gentle and melancholic affair set against a very harsh backdrop. It isn't fully developed and both the stories don't quite blend well enough but its attempt to focus on the something mundane where life is so full of hardships and uncertainties is very commendable and gives this a lot of warmth..

When you google Gaza Mon Amour now one of the first results is that the actress playing Hiam Abbass' wayward daughter, Maisa Abd Elhadi, was arrested by the Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank last October for protesting the occupation. This Gaza-set, bitter-sweet romantic comedy is rendered harrowing in hindsight by one haunting question: how many people and places in the Nasser Brothers' Gaza Mon Amour have been obliterated since October? Long live the people of Gaza and the West Bank, and free Palestine 🇵🇸

Love in the time of occupation—intertwines the human and sociopolitical without one ever overshadowing or removing weight from the other. The humor brings Elia Suleiman to mind, but here it’s a bit less droll, with the human element being the main source of comedy rather than the political (not to imply that the two are mutually exclusive, of course). 

My heart sank to the pit of my stomach seeing the all-too-familiar image of the Gaza cityscape at night, lit up by an explosion from an Israeli bomb. Something many of us are only recently acquainted with (at least this viscerally) is already an inescapable and immediately understood image for Palestinians in a 2020 film. Later, a moment of anxiety and gathering courage for the protagonist simultaneously emphasized and cut through by the incessant buzz of an IOF drone overhead.

Gaza Mon Amour is a captivating romcom set in turbulent Palestine, which makes the film even more unique. A 60 year old man survives on fishing and coincidentally captures an antique statue of Greek god Apollo. Meanwhile, he falls in love with a tailor amidst police discourse.

The Nasser twin brothers directed Gaza Mon Amour which is an engaging tale of love and life in a challenging place.

الفيلم تحسه فوتوكوبي مع لمسات ايليا سليمان، فيلم اصيل وساحر وشخصياته جميلة وكوميديته عظيمة وعرضه للأحوال الفلسطينية في الخلفية عظيم.

Ahhhh my heart. I watched this at an outdoor screening and forgot how cold I was - a testament to this film. I love the Palestine visibility and the gentle reminder that ACAB knows no borders. One of my faves of festival for many reasons.

movies like this are so important. it's very important to humanize victims of war crimes, apartheid, and annihilation. It is vital for the world to see Palestinian laughter, joy, and love persevering through harsh surroundings. Each and every Palestinian is a person with emotions, hobbies, likes and dislikes, aspirations, ambitions, unique skills and capabilities, diverse personalities and a variety of traits.

This grounded elderly couple romcom with the backdrop of turbulence in Gaza is imperfect but great. Amazing cinematography, lovely music, some brilliant shot compositions, beautiful cast, and an unforgettably sweet final scene. i found out about this movie through Hiam Abbass and im glad i did. it's incredibly delightful, melancholic, and ultimately, endearing. In Shaa Allah, soon we will all see a free Palestine and more Palestinian art like this one. Highly recommend !!

This is a tonal wave of emotions. It begins in the vein of most romantic films, but it's shrouded by political discourse. It's a polarising experience that sucks you in. Gaza Mon Amour is captivatingly poetic and knocked me for six. No words I write can give this film any justice.

TIFF 2020 Film# 3

Reason for Pick - we generally love Palastinian films

Sweet, gentle, and sad. It reminded me of the 2003 Armenian film Vodka Lemon, but without the touches of Aki that film brought. Both are stories of economically devastated regions, and how the youth just want to escape, and the old just want to eek out a simple living and find happiness and comfort where they can. They’re also both political commentaries on how those in charge seem to be doing so much better than their charges.

Gaza Mon Amour isn’t devoid of humor, but it’s subtler and the absurdity is bittersweet. Both films show how the human spirit can survive, despite the hardships it has to endure .. and that gives me hope in these dark days.
