90’s set Uruguayan slasher with giallo influences does what most modern movies akin to this lack… it’s not utterly hollow with cringe wink wink artificial moments slathered all over the place—it’s funnier than I thought it would be, utilizes a great location, and it actually feels like a real movie!
I like how we spend a good 20+ minutes with the characters before the mayhem begins and just how nicely shot this movie looks/sounds with that movie theater screen glow adding to the atmosphere. The murder set pieces deliver and are definitely the highlights here… throat slits, skewered heads, and eye trauma steal the show but as much as I dug this it was missing that little extra oomph to push it…

THAT CIGARETTE EXHALE!
THAT PROJECTOR ROOM SCENE!
Wow. Wow. Wow.
This hooked me right off the bat! Seriously, what a great giallo homage - with fantastically stylized camerawork (lots of extreme closeups, slo-mo and my fav - the dolly zoom), gruesomely violent kills and a jangling score. Even the end credits are cool.
Basically - lots of goo, lots of neon and lots of synth.
Exactly my kind of film.
Pd: Julieta Spinelli casate conmigo (?
Ive been sick with a stomach thing all week so that’s been a fun time for me! Haven’t felt like watching anything at all until tonight so I picked this and it was a good choice.
Lots of nice touches, gialloesque vibes, cool lighting, nods to classics, and some beautifully done gore scenes that actually made me kinda nauseous in my current state. I should revisit it in a bit because I could see it growing on me when the opening scene with a guy eating an eyeball doesn’t make me want to run to the bathroom.
Oh well, back to bed for me!
"Will you shut up and watch the movie!"
Most relatable slasher villain because if you’ve ever sat behind a group of people talking through the entire movie, or those who do some sexual things and make noises, or turn the cinema into a picnic, with bringing liter-sized drinks and the world's most foul-smelling chips, you too will briefly understand this killer.
Yes! An homage done right. Not just nostalgia bait, hollow and smoky, but a movie worth watching on its own — diving deeper into it’s influences past just some foggy filters and a wink to the audience. It trusts us to understand the references and we can trust the filmmakers to make a movie that’s worth watching on its own merits.
The Last Matinee is a neo-giallo that truly captures the Italian horror heart in a modern film, set in Uruguay in the 90s. The one-location movie theater setting is so exciting and smart, and it gives the color palette some depth and ammo; the movie isn’t just neon-toned for neon’s sake, but the eerie glow comes from the lit…
Overall fun and stylish, but they had the chance to kill this guy two separate times and didn't take it so I have to subtract points.
Kinda want to add points back for that cigarette smoke kill, that was pretty wild.
“Will you shut up and watch the movie!”
I’ve been seeing some serious hype surrounding this movie lately and it deserves every bit of it.
A Spanish inspired giallo in a theater setting?! Sign me the fuck up.
Take me to Montevideo in 1993 where they’re advertising the poster of Dario Argento’s Opera, fucking. take. meeeee.
The Last Matinee was surprisingly pretty damn fun, although it doesn’t bring anything new to the slasher game it still manages to keep you fully invested, even if the characters are pretty dull, the gory in-your-face kills surely make up for it.
Cinema Paradiso meets horror? Yes.
Black gloved killer? Yes.
A whole other movie playing during the movie you’re watching? YESSS!!!
What can I say, I really dug this.
More importantly… Where the fuck can I watch Dinosaurio? 👀
Cinema set slasher; a tribute to the glory days of the eighties overlaid with Giallo vibes. The Last Matinee carries off its simple premise well. It's basically a maniac killing patrons at a Montevideo cinema during a stormy night. The film is really all about the style. Director Maximiliano Contenti is obviously up on his Argento stuff (that Opera poster on the wall is a nice touch!) Its all bold reds and greens, close ups and stylistically choreographed murder scenes. Cigarette smoke pouring from a throat slit, numerous knives in the heart and some eyeball violence with more besides. The film doesn't skimp on the blood and gore. It's well paced, spending a bit of time introducing the characters before…
What's the movie about?
In 90s, retro, neon movie theater. I want to work there! The idea of a slasher takes place in movie theater is so fun. It's large, cozy, vintage. Okay, there's a crazy killer inside, but who cares? I wanna watch a horror movie there.
