Maybe the real monster was all the stupid family drama all along.
My first Thai Kaiju film! It was ok!
There are a multitude of issues in this film. Most of all is all the bland characters and their pointless drama. I couldn’t tell you who the main character was because the film didn’t seem to know. You think you’ve figured it out then that character disappears for 20 minutes while you follow a different storyline. That wouldn’t be much of an issue if it wasn’t for the fact that everyone was uninteresting and so was their storylines. I liked the burnt out cop, he was at least engaging.
Another huge issue is the films…
This movie was cool for about 10 minutes and then did this really not cool thing by sucking for the remaining hour and a half.
oh great another case of the poster being a hell of a lot cooler than the actual film. just what i wanted.
Promising start, the intro was great it had atmosphere and some cool creature design. Too much creature exposition very early on eliminated any future scare and gave it some B-movie vibes which probably wasn't the intention. Mix that with a very serious tone and the result isn't good. It becomes something along the lines of a Thai B-movie Jurassic Park mixed with Godzilla and The Host.
Beautiful scenery, ok acting, awesome special effects, most generic score i've heard in a while, love the rainy weather and weird story direction. Some scenes felt overlong and they went for a really weird second half. Extremely weird last 5 minutes, what the hell was that music choice?!
I could see some Kaijū lovers getting a kick out of The Lake for it's monster parts but the rest is mediocre at best.
Thailand's grand attempt at a high-budget creature feature may be perceived as grandiose. Subliminally, it is, but its direction and approach to how the story unfolds are responsible for it not being able to achieve quite so. Heavily restrained by the obsolescence of Thai's values, The Lake isn't anywhere near successful in creating its own legend. At least it's mildly entertaining and the "Thaiju" is nice to look at!
The Lake has great looking effects and creature design but that only gets you so far. I can overlook the shoddy story and don't mind that it rips off a lot from other movies but there has to at least be some fun carnage in a monster movie. These attack scenes are all poorly shot and edited to shit, making them frustrating to watch. The movie also essentially ends soon after the hour mark yet keeps going. The final 25 minutes seem to play out entirely in slow motion and it feels like it takes forever for the movie to end. A disappointing watch.
Edit: The version I watched was an edited version that runs 94 minutes (found on Vudu in the US). I don't know what the differences are but I'd recommend trying to find the full 105 minute version if you're going to watch this.
I saw the lukewarm reviews this was getting and happily pressed 'play' regardless—a new monster movie out of Thailand? There was no way I was sitting this one out. You see, we fans of 'giant creature run amok' movies know that if we only waited for films as good as "The Host" or even "Cloverfield," we'd be waiting a long time; in other words, you gotta get your monster fix where you can get it.
And, hey, "The Lake" isn't half bad; it's not particularly good either, but it looks slick, has a great sense of atmosphere thanks to the never-ending downpour of rain, and I have to applaud the filmmakers for using a mix of practical puppets, man-in-rubber-suit, and…
Score : 3.2/10 ✅
Annoyingly terrible because the director is too preoccupied to show the gigantic practical monster doing a staring contest with every human it crosses (but let me be clear, the design is freaking cool) and yet, everything else sucks.
The editing and the continuity of the scenes are a colossal mess. Rarely do I say this but the pre-production/production should have been handled better. Pretty sure they had a hard time effectuating most of the things they wanted to do during production and realized the post-production team would save their asses somehow. I’m pretty confident the post-production team spent more time masking unpolished stuff and adding unfitting music instead of enhancing this monster flick. Speaking of the…
The Lake is a Thai creature feature that has a terminal case of bad pacing. Editing and pacing alone sink this film's chances of being a fun monster movie. It crawls and lingers too long on shots when it needs to crackle with thrills and excitement.
The creature itself is a pretty cool design and a mix of CGI and practical effects. Sometimes, unfortunately, they place the creature in scenes far too reminiscent of Jurassic Park and since the movie is such a sluggard, we linger with shots of a dinosaur-looking creature peering into a car for seemingly forever. Come on movie, pick up the pace! Jeesh.
Perhaps its not the film's fault but the streaming service I watched this…
The Lake is a monster movie with a really cool monster. Jordu Schell is responsible for the creature design, and he’s got a very impressive portfolio of monsters and monster movies that he’s been apart of. The monster is a combination of CGI, guy in a suit, and full sized Thaiju animatronics. They did a great job on the effects!
Besides just the monster I also really enjoyed all of the drone shots of Thailand. This movie is shot very well except for when they would cut the scene right before a kill. I suppose that keeps this flick fairly kid friendly minus a few bloody dead bodies, and they really want you to feel bad about the dead. They play this sad piano music throughout which really saps all the fun out of the movie, but it’s a cool monster.
