That scene of the old man shooting the guards with his bow & arrow while riding a fucking electric scooter will never leave me.
It goes to unexpected places. This anime is in no way rigorous about its depiction of Japan following a devastating earthquake that causes it to sink. It never really takes a wider view of the situation, sticking to the perspective of this one family and the people they meet along the way. There are long stretches where we don't really know where they're supposed to be going, what must be done to get them to safety. What the show makes clear, though, is that they're always in a perilous situation. People die, and they die quick. And there isn't much to be done about it.
There's a long, odd diversion into a self-sufficient city that worships a spiritual medium. There's…
simultaneously very very good and very very bad. some decisions in it are absolutely brilliant (the atmosphere in ep1&2, onsen rap, haruo's run, kite's balloon), some decisions are just bafflingly bad (3 out of 10 eps on the cult???). some parts are great because enough time is spent on little moments that feel very real (sibling conversations in the lifeboat), while most parts - and esp. most deaths - feel so bizarrely rushed and jumpy. altogether it just all feels so strangely half-baked, while also somehow too long? either way, it's a very strange phenomenon that certainly warrants study, esp. in how its narrative structure managed to feel like it went to so many places yet also so few (in…
What an utter waste of time. Started off well, fucking shot itself in the foot after episode 3.
someone needs to rescue yuasa from netflix headquarters so he can make his next mind game and stop working on this terrible shit. worst anime of 2020
unfortunately the least impressive work of masaaki yuasa’s career. weakest characters, weakest animation, weakest world building, worst pacing, and least memorable and impactful story. and it’s still kinda alright? probably would’ve dropped this if it didn’t have yuasa’s name on it but i’m not upset i stuck it out. some good ideas but insanely disappointing, feels like masaaki wasn’t very involved with how incomplete every aspect of this felt
"You're kidding!" -A main character mere seconds before succumbing to one of the stupidest anime deaths this year, Japan Sinks 2020
Hope, while often necessary, can be a ruinous thing to have in the midst of a disaster. Despite the catastrophically negative reception among friends and the similarly dismal scores the show has, I still had hope that it could be at least entertaining in some regard. Even an Inuyashiki tier “so bad it’s good” title would’ve been enough to be satisfying, if still ultimately bizarre given how this is treated as a Yuasa work...more on that later. Unfortunately, this ONA is just an abject failure in almost all regards, and outside of some moments in the second half, is…
this went hard asf y’all are just a bunch of anime obsessed nerds. my philosophy is if you are aware of what anime’s are “good” and “bad” your opinion should not matter to me or anyone. much love ❤️
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
This is the strangest anime I have watched but not in a charming intended way but in a "did any of the writers or directors" have interactions with humans" kind of uncanny valley thing. The music in the background is the funniest or the most disturbing thing ever. When everything is exploding, a character dies or there is a fight it plays lofi in the background which makes me confused. No character is deeper than surface view, you will remember one thing about them and any other thing about them will be lost in your memory. There is no respect for these characters at all they all survive an earthquake that destroys Japan with no injuries that last and die…
