Hello all, and welcome to the Letterboxd Season Challenge!
This iteration is the challenge's ninth, and for those who may be new to LSC, below you'll find a brief rundown of the pertinent info you'll need to participate. But first, a quick doff of the cap to LSC's past hosts, Monsieur Flynn, kurt k, and Benjamin Milot; thank you for your vision and dedication to this fun and varied challenge! This year, Adam Graff, Wade McCormick, and I are taking over co-hosting duties. As multi-year LSC alums, we've thoroughly enjoyed creating this year's lineup, and we hope there will be plenty of excitement, discovery, and entertainment ahead for each of you. Now, on to the particulars!
The challenge takes place over 33 weeks, and each week features a different theme. (You can find these in the notes). Your task is to choose one (1) previously unseen feature-length film that meets the weekly criteria and watch it! Each week of the challenge corresponds to a week on the calendar and, if you follow the schedule, results in a relaxed one-movie-a-week pace. (LSC runs from the first week in September to the first week in May, with a two-week break at the end of December). However, we are not dictators, so you may watch your chosen films in whatever order and at whatever pace you wish. If you want to watch more than one film for each week/theme, you may certainly do so! Or maybe you want to blaze through all 33 movies in one week—go for it! Additionally, you may swap your choices at any point if accessibility or whim dictates. Also, if you've seen all the films for a given week, let us know in the comment section or on our Discord channel (linked below), and we'll help you find some alternatives. And to those who discover the challenge after it's begun, no worries! We're happy to have you join and watch whatever you can.
The Letterboxd Season Challenge is about breaking out of our movie-watching comfort zones to discover something new, unexpected, or unfamiliar and to push us to catch up with titles we may have neglected, put off, or outright dismissed. We're here to expand our cinematic horizons and mix in some fun along the way, so join us on this movie-watching adventure, choose your films, throw them in a list, and share it in the comments! Welcome to LSC9!
Cloning this list only replicates the movies, not the notes that go with them. Click here for a copy of the theme prompts. Includes all formatting and links.
Don't forget to tag your lists and reviews, either with the letterboxd season challenge and/or lsc9 tags or a week-specific one, as seen in the notes; it's more fun when we all participate, and tagging makes it easier to follow along as everybody watches!
