Never understood why this one was so maligned?  It’s honestly not that bad.

Been awhile since I’d watched this one but Jules Dassin made some pretty hard boiled, tuff ass gangster flicks for his time.

What a gem!  Can’t believe I’ve never seen this one!  It’s a melancholy French crime masterpiece with lots of emotional depth.  Reminiscent of Melville with a dash of Jules Dassin.  Heartfelt and gritty, heartbreaking and violent.  The cast is stellar with Gérard Depardieu turning in one of his best performances as a tough but vulnerable young thug.  My only qualm is that Catherine Deneuve’s talent is somewhat wasted here as she serves as little more than a pretty face, but overall this is a must see piece of 80’s neo noir!  Highly recommended!

Like Lord of the Flies by way of 70’s Werner Herzog.  Stunning acting (by mostly non actors).  Gorgeous cinematography and score. Phenomenal.  I’ll be surprised if I see a better film at the festival this year.
