The lives of a Native woman and a troubled young boy intersect over the course of a school day on a reservation in Oklahoma.
bittersweet little film, beautiful naturalism and very intimate feeling. never knew so many cigarettes could be smoked in 12 mins
an understated powerful short film. it has so much to say in the short time, with, for example, the juxtapositions of things. like take for instance, the lavish casino contrasted with the disparity amongst most actual indigenous people living on the same reservation. the short also touches on topics like the disparity of the school system, family trauma, bullying, and more, and i think also emphasizes the importance of teachers. the acting is also standout! idk what exactly it is about her, but lily gladstone is so captivating. and the way this was shot, accompanied with the music and all just made it such a nice and intimate and real slice of life. ugh i just love a good slice…
lily gladstone smoking and being a TEACHER for 12 minutes straight ohhhhh nooooooo……. it’s so bad for me guys like i’m really in love with her like it’s real it’s so fucking bad for me i’m in love with her like forreal forreal [gunshot]
this short is only 12 minutes yet manages to delve into the poverty that many members of the indigenous community face, the lack of funding and wages for teachers (especially indigenous ones!!), childhood and generational trauma, unhealthy coping mechanisms, bullying, etc. wow.
as someone with a mother in education and someone who’s taught for a bit as well, i just had no idea that i needed to see lily gladstone as a tired, burnt out teacher, but i most certainly did and i thank erica tremblay for giving that to me.
My elementary school years would have been so much better if Lily Gladstone had been my teacher.
One Popular Film Around The World Challenge Film #40
United States of America
There are many interpretations of why Lily Gladstone’s character shows up the way she does with this student being bullied, and I think a bit of it is projection, a good bit is most likely how overworked and underpaid she is as a teacher in this film. The 10 or so minutes I had with these characters felt so organic and authentic and I only wish we had more with them!
