The disappearance of a teen causes her older sister (Nam Sang-mi) to return to the home of their extremely religious mother. What looks like a simple runaway draws increased police attention (Ryu Seung-ryong) with a series of suicides in their apartment complex. As the self-harm looks increasingly supernatural, questions of demonic possession against the backdrop of religious hysteria are raised.
Writer / Director Lee Yong-ju was also responsible for last year’s big budget sci-fi actioner Seobok. A drastically different genre effort, the only familiar component is Jang Young-nam in morally murky supporting roles. In both cases, Lee using the genres as jumping off points for contemplative melodramas – though the horror comes across far better than the sci-fi in his…
Possessed is a delightfully scary little movie with an engaging story that had somehow remained off my (and apparently many others) radar. It's not gory, but it doesn't need to be, because it builds suspense and dread very effectively. The worst I can say about it is that it relies heavily on jump scares--but they are earned jump scares, not fakey, cat jumping into the frame jump scares.
If you despair that you've seen every decent horror movie made in the last 120 years (like me), this might be just what you need. Great South Korean stuff.
This is a solid horror mystery that draws on family elements. It didn't need to be quite as long as it is though as it started to get bogged down.
An engrossing supernatural tale in which characters lose their minds amid a steady ramping up of hysteria. Arguably, it’s a story about belief, and how folk use their chosen religion to make sense of things, including the inexplicable. For instance, there’s a Christian zealot and a shaman who are dealing with a 14-year-old girl who begins behaving strangely. Sudden deaths occur, and the girl’s older sister becomes ever more desperate as events turn increasingly bizarre.
I like that the malevolent presence is never explained. I mean, it could be evil, or a force for good working in (very) mysterious ways. Either way, the film seems to suggest that faith and feelings can manifest themselves into physical existence.
Unbelievably good looking for a 2009 movie, if you had told me this was a 2019 movie I would have easily believed you. Usually I hate the whole shaman trope but in this movie it worked for me, not too much that it becomes obnoxious but just enough that it's very mysterious and intriguing.
If I had to pick a flaw I would say the ending probably could've played up the emotional aspect a bit more, I was super engaged at that point and they could've capitalised on it but ended up not really doing anything very moving.
Also a very frightening movie, the sound design especially is on point. Great use of sound effects sprinkled in here and there to hook you with fear and ramp up the tension, and everything at the perfect volumes.
So beautifully filmed, nicely acted, with some genuinely nightmarish imagery as well as pretty perfect dream sequences. It's strange, it's dark, it's tense and it's beautiful. Koreans should make more of this stuff.
Gotta say, when it hits the right pitch, Korean horror is just gloriously fucked up.:)
It was OK. Didn't do a good job of elevating the suspense and it felt a bit cheap with it mainly taking place at one location. Nothing really stood out.
Surprisingly a well crafted and presented story, that despite its simplicity, was able to keep me interested till the end.
Expecting horror from this watch would be a mistake, and for me, the poster and the title were misleading in terms of the core focus of the movie - it’s not the wacky possession scenes Emily Rose style. The plot centers around the investigation of the missing kid - So Jin. While there is a fair share of creepy supernatural elements, the more important part is the human aspect.
How much are we willing to do in a dire situation? How easily can we be influenced and believe in unbelievable things when all the other options turned out to be…
exorcism horror with minor domestic drama elements that sees the abuse by the residents an apartment building full of religious fanatics repaid by the abused with demonic fury. maintains an interesting atmosphere/mood throughout but has a bad script.
Possessed is a Korean psychological horror film that's kind of like if David Lynch directed an amalgamation of the movies The Wailing and The Sixth Sense.
There really isn't too much to say about this movie, except that it's not for novice horror fans, and that you'll probably either love it or hate it...I was stuck somewhere in the middle.
MY FAVORITE SCENE-Freddy Krueger would be really confused in this movie's universe.
