Made me feel nostalgic for someone else's nostalgia and I think that's pretty great
“Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” introduces itself as a fantastical adventure about a Houston fourth-grader who’s plucked out of school for a confidential NASA mission in the spring of 1969 (those wacky scientists accidentally built the lunar module too small for an adult), but Richard Linklater’s first animated feature since “A Scanner Darkly” isn’t really a story about a kid who secretly paved the way for Neil Armstrong, or even a story about a kid who had any special interest in the stars above. In fact, this semi-autobiographical sketch isn’t really a story at all so much as a sweetly effervescent string of Kodachrome memories from the filmmaker’s own childhood — the childhood of someone who was born…
Apollo 10 1/2 is a joyous ode to coming of age in the 60s. It’s bound to floor you with its stunning animation and will bring a big ole’ smile to your face. It’s Linklater telling a personal yet universal story that reminds us why he’s one of the medium’s greatest.
When Stan was talking about the deeper meanings of 2001 to anyone he gets to talk to, I was like:
“Shit. He’s just like me.”
A movie about memories and dreams, Vintage Linklater. The whole movie feels like a nice summer memory. Set during the 1960s space race, Apollo 10 1/2 is an original, sweet & deeply personal nostalgic trip down memory lane told through the eyes of a kid growing up in Houston. A mix of autbiography and fantasy and pure love of a time and place. Glorious soundtrack, loved the animation & I smiled from start to finish!
Nostalgias in the air folks, and I’m all for it when it comes to great directors reminiscing upon greater times (NOT YOU KENNETH BRANAGH).
It’s also absolutely lovely to see Linklater after all these years still pouring out absolute gold. Can’t wait for what the master does next.
All of my guys are getting old and making wistful memory pieces. Once upon a time in Houston…
A guided, Rotoscoped tour through a great artist’s brain and formative years.

A coming-of-age story set in the suburbs of Houston, Texas in the summer of 1969, centered around the historic Apollo 11 moon landing.
As expected, this isn’t the animated SciFi adventure through space that many viewers will be thinking it is when clicking play on Netflix. Expectations can be killer sometimes, and this is a case where I feel the result may frustrate people to no end. For those of us who know Linklater and his style, we knew what to expect here, and that is exactly what we get. It all comes down to whether or not this introspective look at what it was like to grow up during this time hooks you or not.…
