Not a single nudity or sex scene in a movie full of prostitutes.
That's when you know it's a fucking great movie....
The film bravely tries to make a prostitute into a commercial masala "hero". However, in its attempt at doing that, the film focuses too much on exterior facets and not enough on Gangu’s interior and who she was as a person. The film chooses to not explore the emotional and mental trauma of living in such a place, and thus reducing the impact of when Gangubai fights for their human rights. That said, the film is effective enough to make us want to cheer for Gangubai!
This is an incredibly difficult character to pull of and despite Alia’s visible efforts, she’s not always entirely convincing. I did absolutely love Seema Pahwa and Jim Sarbh in this.

Prostitution is so looked down upon that people seem to forget it's a product of disrespecting women. Many of them didn't have a choice but to fight and turn it into their advantage and benefits. I love films that motivate respect and understanding for them. Gangubai is a bad bitch mafia queen with a golden heart. She's a mother!
this movie couldve done so much more than what it did - i mean the whole message was “prostitution is not bad its a respectable profession” when women r literally forced into prostitution and subjected to rape and violence everyday .. ofc they deserve respect but this shouldnt have happened to them in the first place???? and thats never addressed.
also yes simply closing down brothels and criminalising it is not the solution bcs those women will have no place to go and most of them r uneducated BUT the film couldve shown their plight wo glamourising it by saying pRoStitUtIoN iS ThE wOrLdS oLdEsT pRofEsSiOn - that whole speech was shit bcs wdym “if it werent for brothels women…
