There are some truly intense moments in this film, more than a few times I was uncomfortable and edgy, and it’s backed up by a fantastic score and absolutely gorgeous cinematography. I found the first half to be more enthralling than the second half though, which is strange because more happens in the second half, but I found the near misses of the beginning so effective. Wherever this was filmed was so beautiful, a freezing cold dreamland, take me there please. Cute dog too.
Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong.
What a surprise. I couldn’t even blink my eyes. It's a tense, and well executed film that portrays a very accurate representation of the dangers of diving. Such a good independent film.
The score was on point, the acting very convincing and the cinematography just stunning.

Zwei konkurrierende Schwestern gehen im winterlichen Norwegen in einem Fjord tauchen. Als eine nach einem Steinschlag am Grund festsitzt, beginnt ein Wettrennen gegen die Zeit.
Ist jetzt nichts umwerfend Neues, was man da sieht. Die Charaktere sind auch nicht wirklich überzeugend gezeichnet. Der Zeitdruck, die Dunkelheit, die Enge und immer neue Missgeschicke machen die Rettungsaktion dennoch spannend, wie ich finde. Und das norwegische Setting ist auch mal etwas anderes.
Kann man durchaus mal machen...
I watched (and reviewed) The Dive earlier today only to find out it's a remake of this Swedish/Norwegiean film. Normally I'd say, "Silly Americans always remaking movies..." but The Dive was a German film (in English)... so I guess we can blame Germany for once (ahem).
Breaking Surface is about two sisters diving in a remote location when one gets pinned under a rock. The other has to free her with oxygen levels running low.
This flick spends a solid fifteen minutes with the sisters before they dive so I understood and cared for them more than in the remake. Plus the filmmaking is genuinely better and more suspenseful... though not tremendously so. Plus there's a couple additional suspenseful and…
This was really good!
The movies does a great job setting up different scenarios, and the intensity of the situation by making sure the passage of time is relevant and decision making is crucial to the survival of the characters. It can feel a bit Hollywoodesque sometimes, with the over the top score and some dramatic situations, but it does an excellent work in tension building and with its characters.
The inclusion of the song What Else is There? by Röyksopp was a pleasant surprise. I love that song so much. 😊
Speaking of Hollywood. I'm willing to bet there will be an American remake of this... In 3... 2...
77 minute long thriller about a woman trapped under a rock underwater? Absolutement, mon capitaine!
Pretty much does what I just said it does, as a pair of half-sisters fight for their lives after a rock fall during a diving holiday. There's a bit too much domestic drama even for a film this short (the older one resents the younger one's connection to their mum) and there's one scene that's really unnecessarily unpleasant that made me feel less inclined to rate this as positively as I am doing.
But I'll let it fly as this is the sort of competently done thriller that I could see doing well if it was in English and was therefore allowed…

Моя мать настолько уважает жанр выживаний в суровых условиях, что возвращаясь с суток, спав ночью только 4 часа, с утра качает это и смотрит, ну что ж, на самом деле достойный представитель жанра, с тараканами в голове у героинь, из-за их прошлого, и с невезением в кубе, но все равно это было не затянуто и увлекательно, тут есть аспекты и профессионализма, но сюжет бы не шёл верным курсом, если бы сценарист не подкидывал сюрпризы, в виде неожиданных сбоев и невнимательности ГГ.
🐕 А собака в качестве персонажа - это сплошная милота, из необычного выделю кстати сцену с ограблением дома, ради добычи ресурсов, ну и под водой снято не хуже чем на поверхности.
