It can be frustrating to watch a film that doesn’t seem to understand its own strengths; it’s downright maddening to watch three of them. With “Peninsula” (stylized for its North American release as “Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula”), director Yeon Sang-ho has now made an entire trilogy of exuberant, maximalist, and ultimately tiresome zombie movies that cannibalize their best ideas in a crazed dash towards mediocrity. This erratic and derivative new chapter is by far the most chewed up of the three, as its outsized ambition (or at least its scale) makes it that much easier to see how Yeon’s latest yarn shrinks away from its own potential like it’s scared of the movie it could’ve been. At the end…
If you somehow managed to combine Mad Max: Fury Road, Transporter, and The Walking Dead, then this film will be the end result. Absolutely love the action and the CGI, but the absolute tearjerker scene from its predecessor film is something that you can’t easily top. And I just know the Fast and Furious franchise delayed F9 because they were threatened by this film.
Doesn’t have the emotional core that Train to Busan destroyed me with, but I curbed my expectations and ended up having a decent time with this doofy movie. A more action/more zombies/more cgi kinda sequel and the scale is way bigger than Busan.. with bigger production and numerous atmospheric lighting choices/attention to detail that kinda made me wish this was in the sameballpark as it’s predecessor story wise. I was on board with the fast paced intro and Escape from New York/Land of the Dead/Mad Max/video game influences, but that second act started to drag a bit for me. Luckily the finale lets loose... it’s a certified firing on all cylinders banger and worth the price of admission alone despite the poor CGI’s best intentions. Didn’t love it like I thought I would, but Peninsula was a decent time and a decent addition to its world.
Terrible sequel on the otherwise pretty good Train to Busan. Main problem is that the characters are uninteresting, bad acting, mediocore script and some melodrama that is way too sentimental and feels forced. It all feels like some typical Hollywood stuff. There a few decent action scenes (like that game of survival) but it’s unfortunately drowned with lots of bad CGI which at times looked like a racing videogame.
A touch more fun than the original, which I thought was merely a sturdy run though the well-worn zombie playbook. This on the other hand is more of a post-apocalypse MAD MAX knockoff, which lets it get a little weirder even while it's sticking to the expected beats. I liked the two kid sisters and all their drifting stuff, cute touch.
this felt more like a video game than a movie and that’s pretty much all i have to say about it
if you liked the first Train to Busan now see what it would look like without the intimacy or clever visual action of the train concept and instead just another one of the zombie genres many vague, dilapidated quarantine zones overrun with paramilitary gangs and civilian survivors hunting for scraps interspersed with some poor imitations of John Wick gunplay and Fast & Furious cg car chases.
