RRR is
The best action movie of the year
The best musical of the year
The best romantic comedy of the year
The best historical drama of the year
And the best movie ever made about fighting colonialism with dance battles and armies of rampaging animals and most of all, friendship
this got me thinking about how deteriorated the notion of spectacle is in the american cinema now. our spectacle is entirely metatextual, just watching different IP appear on screen together is supposed to be thrilling. RRR gets what actual spectacle should look like. absolutely electrifying from beginning to end. i’ll leave it at that bc i’m less familiar with indian cinema than i should be but i had an absolute blast watching this, laughing and cheering more than i’ve done in a theater in years. if you have the opportunity to see this in a theater do NOT pass it up
lol if you guys thought i was too hard on hollywood blockbusters *before* i saw this…
A MOVIE LARGELY ABOUT LOVING YOUR BRO AND GOING BEAST MODE THROUGH THICK AND THIN. EVERYONE ELSE DROPPING THIS YEAR CAN PACK IT UP. YOU ARE NOT TOPPING THIS
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
electric. just purely fucking electric. the greatest theater experience i've ever had, one of the most personally inspiring and weirdly validating musical sequences i've ever seen, an outstanding case for "amusement park" cinema as art. beautiful cinematography, wondrous choreography, excellent effects both analog and digital, music so perfectly on the nose i'm not convinced i didn't write it (though i would've added the lyrics "beautiful white lady" to the theme for jenny, aka phoebe waller-bridgerton.) the comedy lands, the friendship at the center is more loving than most romcoms, the action somehow escalates consistently and repeatedly over a three-hour runtime, even the dancing is imbued with such a spectacle and genuine physical energy that's been missing from every hollywood musical…
S.S. Rajamouli should absolutely be nominated for Best Director this year, if not actually win. Do you know how much goodwill you have to build with your audience to follow a 40 minute title drop with what is essentially a full-length episode of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, expository theme song and all, in the middle of your 3 hour action epic, and have it work?
The shot of a black man shaking his head after that white guy does a really bad swing dance is the cut of the century. Absolutely intoxicating to sit in a crowd of 900 people loudly jeering the British monarchy. I know damn well there were some chaps in that theater, quietly shaking in their oxfords on some “oh dear oh bother” shit.
For the suspenders dance scene alone, this was one of the funnest movies I've seen in years, but in addition to that you get: a bromance for the ages, heroic bloodshed, revolutionary violence, hatred of the British, and homoerotic sadomasochism. It's the kind of movie Mel Gibson would make if he were Hindu, the Indian Braveheart, but with dancing. Seriously, get some friends, some beers and throw this on and be prepared for an amazing experience.
