I liked this. It felt like flashes of memories we all have at times in our lives. Sometimes because they're impactful (a sexual experience), sometimes mysterious and threatening (being approached by a possibly dangerous person), sometimes bizarre (seeing a parent in a weird situation) and sometimes completely random (like walking down an alley in an otherwise benign setting).
Raven Jackson has a voice and it'll be cool to see what she does next.
Neat little structuralist film that's just the right length really, with individual vignettes based around the body part most affected or 'struck' by the experience (or 'nettle' of the title). There's a lot of fly-on-the-wall camerawork and silence and attention to detail, but the payoffs are provoking across the board, and I particularly liked the last few moments of the film, creating an ambience that I sorely needed today.

All dirt roads taste of salt
Finally got to see this on the big screen at Indie Memphis Film Festival after watching it god knows how many times on Criterion Channel, and lord it’s immaculate.
a cinema composed of commas, edges, unmet shadows and quiet egresses planting into blue evenings. the matrilineallity of a standing wave. tactility or what a body can evoke, through time— tenderness inundated with brutality (elsewhere of a deeper trust). sweet frustrations. a river running through it. raven jackson—is she the filmmaker we've been looking for?
“What, you’re not talking today?”
Raven Jackson's second short (that you can find streaming, anyway) is a collection of even shorter shorts, all of which are named after various parts of the body. 'Nettles' is about subtle, stinging moments of womanhood, and Jackson demonstrates she can accomplish so much character development in just one or two shots, so these moments really matter and pop to the viewer. I was particularly impressed with 'throat', which feels to me like it may actually have feature film potential. Whether or not Jackson continues in this incredibly intimate style, I'm excited to see her debut feature film 'All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt', which should be released later this year.
strong, intimate, visceral visual storytelling in 6 poetic snapshots of life that sting and sing. my professor showed this to inspire us on the last day of class as we set out to work on our own projects over break, and I'm so glad she did!
hyped to know that Raven Jackson is now working on a debut feature... the future of cinema is bright
Really beautiful blips of life. So excited to see where Raven Jackson goes from here. Deeply artistic soul.
