Honestly? I was rooting for Astrid the whole time, who tf just steals a chicken
Oooooooooh man I love stylized animation! Give me a unique sketchy vivid world with monochromatic characters over the pointless hyper-realism most American animated movies have been chasing any day of the week. Motion in a car looks so cool in this! Any scene with the lights turned off looks incredible! Boy oh boy do I love simple plots that lead to madcap shenanigans!
If the Academy doesn't nominate this for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (it seems eligible since its worldwide release was this year) then that'll be sooooooo embarrassing for them. But yeah knowing them they're gonna overlook all 3 of the lovely little musical numbers in this and instead nominate the credits song from the Netflix Jerry Seinfeld Pop-Tart movie (remember that was a thing????????)
Animation has the power to make even the simplest emotions feel as infinite and expressive as our most sacred memories, which — despite the edifying nuance and eye-popping flair of recent films such as “Encanto” and “Across the Spider-Verse” — can make it frustrating that American studios have largely been trending toward overcomplicated plots and realistic design. Sébastien Laudenbach and Chiara Malta’s extremely French “Chicken for Linda” is the clearest possible reminder of what we’ve been missing. It’s about an eight-year-old girl named Linda who wants to eat chicken for dinner. Delightful mayhem ensues.
As in Laudenbach’s “The Girl Without Hands,” all of the characters are traced with thick black lines that lend them the aspirational possibility of a fashion…
Funny, stylish, and very French. This is one of the best animations of 2023, but unfortunately neglected. Only the French can create such a beautifully chaotic parallel between personal and social struggles, wrapped in a sweet facade of childlike innocence.
During a Parisian strike, Linda and her mother go on a farcical trip to get a chicken for a special lunch. The distinctive style of color chunks is such a breath of fresh air, creating a minimal, abstract feel that works well with the farcical nature of the story. It's also admirable how the story finds common ground between fights on both large and small scales, and how the revolutionary spirits shall be passed down to the new generation, even just in the form of buying a chicken. Highly recommended.
