Together with Hungarian-born writer Emeric Pressburger, Michael Powell formed one of the most inventive and ambitious filmmaking partnerships in cinema. Though much of their work concerns what it means to be British, this is incidental to their flamboyance, mysticism, passion, and distain for realism, non-existent in the films of their contemporary compatriots. Powell was clearly influenced by Rex Ingram and German Expressionism, while Pressburger started out writing for Max Ophüls and Robert Siodmak. -Geoff Andrew, The Film Handbook
