Gesehen im Programm des Fantasy Filmfest 2022:

Vermutlich ist es paradox die Kritik eines der besten Filme des Jahres mit einem Blick darauf zu beginnen, was mich am Blockbuster-Kino der letzten Jahre stört. Zu erklären, weshalb das italienische Erwachsenenmärchen “Freaks Out” so fantastisch ist, bedeutet aber auch, aufzuzeigen, was “die Anderen” gefühlt komplett verlernt haben. Blockbuster bedeutet mittlerweile fast ausschließlich, große Momente für den Trailer zu erzeugen und Bauchpinselei für das Fandom, das in der Regel bereits mit gewetzten Messern am Rand wartet, um sich bei Nichterfüllung der Fanträume auf das Werk von Leuten zu stürzen, die gar keine eigene Visionen mehr haben dürfen. Niemand geht mehr Risiken ein, in einer Tour werden alte Franchises herausgekramt, in die dann Figuren…

Another film I wouldn’t have known of if it wasn’t for LB (specifically Julia Grohlo).

Starting with the positives, the cinematography is incredible. Lots of great, stunning shots. The CGI, especially with the whole big explosion at the end, was pretty good, though the rest is rather uneven. There’s a nice sense of adventure. The piano covers of popular rock songs like Creep were really unexpected yet so cool. Some of the performances, like the rebel hunchback leader and Chewbacca, seemed to have a blast and it was infectious. And the premise of X Men fighting Nazis is very dope on paper.
