If nothing else, you can't say this film fails to live up to its title! "The Great Battle" is a Korean historical epic that mostly consists of, well, battle. Despite the film's rather lengthy 136-minute runtime, director Kim Kwang-sik doesn't hold back on the action or reserve the major conflict for the end of the film; the CG arrows are soaring through the air from within the first five minutes and there are ample Zack Snyder-style slow mo sequences woven throughout. Whatever you want to call this genre—whether your point of reference is the Helm's Deep siege from "The Two Towers," Snyder’s “300," or John Woo's "Red Cliff" epic—this is the Korean version of that. Occurring in 645, The Siege of Ansi lasted 88 days, and saw a substantially outnumbered force of the Goguryeo (Korea) hold out against a massive invading army of the Tang. While based on a real event, many details like the scale of the fortress don't quite gel with historical accuracy. From a masked honour guard to ultra violent tableaus, The Great Battle desperately wants to be 300 - though lacks Frank Millers' visual flare or hateful xenophobia to achieve its aspirations.

The first battle scene had me a bit worried. Shaky-cam, bad editing, wide shots of a CG army, a pretty boy hero with a bad wig who looked like he stepped out of a live-action anime - things weren’t looking very promising.
And then a 2nd siege battle happens later, & thank god ...

Rock-solid, entertaining, based on real events historic siege movie. Jo In-sung makes for a very compelling lead and the action might make you think of a certain historic action film from the past decade, but alas it was just the right time to bring a bit of that touch back for me. A certain Kim Seolhyun gets to be a nice badass before the writers decided to give her character the single most stupid decision in the film, but alas, by the time the credits roll you will have had a lot of fun and maybe do some research about the actual battle - and yes, most of it went down the way it is portrayed here.
Man, I love a good siege movie. In seventh-century Korea, an invading Chinese army attempts to take a plucky fortified town. For the first half of this movie, the battle scenes were relatively realistic, but the second half veers perilously close to Baahubali-style over-the-topness, to the movie's benefit. The story is mostly battle scenes, for the most part well-filmed, and doesn't get bogged down into irrelevancies like developing characters.

Disaat orang lain sibuk mengagumi karisma aktor utama Jo In-sung, aku malah salfok dengan karakter konyol sang psikopat, Park Byung-eun. Mungkin karena keseringan nonton film/drama-nya dia sebagai antagonis jadi pas disini senang banget karena aura charming-nya lebih keluar.
Filmnya sendiri terbilang biasa bagiku, malah menuju ending lumayan overdramatic. Efek CGI yang digunakan juga dibeberapa part terlihat sedikit mengganggu. Tapi setidaknya film ini tertolong dengan jajaran pemain yang asdfghjkl kelas markotop semua.

Was habe ich mich lange gesträubt The Great Battle zu kaufen. Wie zahlreiche andere südkoreanische Filme, die ich mir in letzter Zeit zulegte, ist auch dieser Actionfilm von Splendid in einem schicken Mediabook erschienen. Nach langen Überlegungen habe ich mich schließlich doch durchringen können, dass Mediabook auf blauen Dunst zu kaufen. Tatsächlich habe ich es nicht bereut.
The Great Battle beruht auf einer berühmten, alten Schlacht, über die historisch wohl relativ wenig bekannt sein soll. Somit hatte man reichlich Raum für künstlerische Freiheiten und hat einen Actionfilm geschaffen, in dem zwei Stunden beinahe durchweg gemetzelt wird.
Die Handlung ist absolut simpel. Es gibt auch hier wieder eine ordentliche Prise Nationalstolz, wenn es die hoffnungslos unterlegenen, aber mutigen und selbstlosen Koreaner…

Ich hätte diesen Film, nach der grottigen Schlacht am Anfang, mit ihren miesen CGI Effekten, beinahe direkt wieder ausgemacht.
Wird dann zwar besser, hat mich aber nicht mehr wirklich gekriegt.
Auch der Score ist leider wenig überzeugend.
Ich habe allerdings erst vor ein paar Tagen "The Fortress" gesehen, welcher zwar kein Actionfilm ist, meiner Meinung nach, aber alles besser macht.
Zumindest hat mir "The Great Battle" Lust gemacht, wieder einmal die Schlacht um Helms Klamm oder die der 300 bei den Termophylen zu sehen.
