아우로라, Aurora - O Resgate das Almas, Аврора, 奥罗拉号客轮, Aurora: Ape tulburi
A little too stretched out for its own good, one of those films that's a mix of great photography and cringe-inducing CGI on the way to nowhere in particular.
Yam Laranas focused more on being a Cinematographer rather than being a Screenwriter and as a Director.
Ganda lang nung mga kuha pero walang laman.
A shipwreck? No. It's more like a trainwreck.
I stumbled across this by chance when I was browsing Netflix. Catching up on some Western horror films I'd missed that were recommended to me, Aurora popped up as a suggestion for me. I originally skipped past it before realising it was Filipino and I went back to it to watch the trailer. I've been looking to have my first films and dramas in each country on MDL so I decided to go ahead with Aurora being my fist Filo film after clarifying it was Filipino.
My Twitter friends said that it was hyped up in the Philippines but it was commonly held as a bit of a flop within the horror genre.
Now, Aurora is made and is meant…
I thought Anne Curtis would have a third streak of quality films this 2018 succeeding her BuyBust and Sid & Aya but this film Aurora failed my expectations. Anne Curtis is a good actress and Yam Laranas is a good director (he directed one of my most favorite local horror films, The Road) but the film’s story failed them. The camera is too shakey especially at the start of the film and the shots are too up close. The sequences where Leana (Anne Curtis) and her sister interchangeably went from their house to the ship were too boring and didn’t really make any sense. This film is also not scary and not thrilling. But I must say that I like some…
A bad story can sink a film no matter how much money is spent on production design and special effects. When I was 8, I wrote a story as ridiculously nonsensical as this. I knew it, I should have been a filmmaker at 8 years old.
Note: If you really want to see Anne Curtis this holiday season, subscribe to Netflix and watch Buy Bust instead. Other good Filipino titles that are currently on Netflix are Metro Manila, Kita Kita, and Heneral Luna.

Meu quarto filme filipino...
Esse é o mais chatinho até hoje.
O final até que dá uma melhorada, mas o decorrer do filme foi difícil de aguentar.
A shipwreck horror which had both Anne Curtis and potential, but made things too complicated for itself. I guess, trying to go deeper than it really was, at the same time as it was your typical creeper horror. Didn't mix very well. Not a total waste, but certainly not as exciting as it could have been.
OH MY GOD
why is no one giving this enough credit?! honestly this is prolly one of the best local films out there. fight me. the scoring was done so well. yea the cgi was done poorly (what do y'all expect) honestly, i don't understand why most found the narrative to dull and dragging? the plot has depth, it's not your typical horror film, which is def a refreshing take. personally, i think the relatively slow pace and vagueness of the film adds to it's appeal.
it's a matter of preference then i guess?
