Downbeat police procedural closer in tone to Memories of Murder than more lurid Korean crime dramas like The Chaser. In contrast to Bong's opus though, it doesn't centre around a cold case for the most part - the killer is known and in custody. It's up to re-assigned narco Hyung-min (played by Kim Yoon-seok, who coincidentally starred in The Chaser) to determine whether Kang Tae-oh's confession to six other murders is legit. It seems like Kang might be trying to play his opposite number for a sucker (at least two of the purported killings turn out to be red herrings), knowing that the Korean legal system proscribes confessions obtained under duress. He hopes to damage Hyung-min's credibility and commute his…
A horrifying, yet beautiful police vs serial killer film.
The police officer Kim Yoon-seok plays is unlike any I've seen in cinema. He has no ego. He is not doing anything to further his career. And he is fine with being wrong and looking like an idiot in his investigation of the truth. Because he truly cares about the people who have been murdered. He will do what it takes to solve their crimes, not by being a hard ass, or bucking the system, but by telling the truth and not backing down.
The way the serial killer toys with him is revolting, but since Kim is so sincere in his efforts and will not let the killer's tricks deter…
A detective attempts to verify the additional homicide confessions of an incarcerated killer, who may just be using him... but to what end?
Based on a real story - whose details aren't exactly easy to pin down, but the victims families initially tried to prevent the films release. Dark Figure of Crime doesn't seem overly exploitative - but the objection is there. The film is very dialogue heavy - revolving around conversations between the two leads. Kim Yoon-seok as detective was my motivation for viewing, and he never lets down. Ju Ji-hoon holds his own with a killer who is infinitely punchable. It never commits fully to courtroom drama, but frequently teases it.
Excellent crime thriller about a detective seeking further punishment of a convicted murderer who despite confessing to further crimes, uses legal loopholes and the statute of limitations, coupled with half truths and misinformation to evade justice.
Kim Yoon-seok is as solid as ever, showing why he's one of the best in the business and rising star Ju Ji-hoon is also impressive, balancing his performance well whilst teetering on the very edge of
scenery chewing (which serves his character well).
Nothing else to mention really, this is just a highly enjoyable twisty ride (based on a true story) that'll keep you in your seat for a couple hours. Great stuff.
Starts strong, interesting and intriguing, unfortunately it doesn’t keep up and fails to deliver in the end. It’s by no means a „bad“ film, just not a really great one either, just lingers somewhere in the middle I’d say.
"A suffocating game of cat-and-mouse played entirely behind bars. This film proves you don't need a chase to deliver masterful suspense."
Dark Figure of Crime is a searing, minimalist thriller based on a chilling true story. The title refers to the crimes that go unreported or undiscovered, and the film tackles this dark void head-on. The setup is brilliantly unconventional: the killer is already caught, serving time for a different murder. From his prison cell, he teases detective Hyung-min (Kim Yoon-seok) with confessions to seven other murders, offering cryptic clues to the locations of bodies no one even knew were missing.
The film is not about the "who," but the "where" and the "why." It transforms the investigation into a…
Kim Yoon-seok is great as usual but I found Ju Ji-hoon’s performance annoying. Other than that it’s just dull and unsatisfying. I’m not advocating for every Korean crime drama to have loads of gut wrenching violence (ok, I kind of am) but if there’s none of that I at least need an interesting story, playing dramatic music during a boring reveleation ain’t gonna fool me.
It was the worst day of your life. Even so, murder can't be forgiven. . . . The people you've killed never got their proper due, and it saddens me that they're all but forgotten. I'm embarassed that I can't do more, and that's why i'm doing this.
The search for truth and justice amidst the manifold of lies and apathy. Only those with the virtues of tenacity and perseverance, and a willingness to lose everything can reach it. A surprising parallel to the act of philosophizing.
I thought that this could benefit from a sprinkling of action sequences, but, looking back at the montages of the protagonist's rummagings through paperwork, such spectacle misses the point, don't it?
Where are you?
