If there's one thing I like about these marathons, it's that every now and then I end up stumbling across a film I would otherwise never see. This is one of them.
Despite the fact that I haven't seen Critters, it's obvious that this picture is a riff on these types of flicks, but instead of aliens, it's more akin to Barbarian and Lovecraft (the film is based on one of the authors' stories). Genealogy and cursed ancestry are themes that run throughout so many of Lovecraft's stories. I can't say I've ever seen these themes explored in a Lovecraftian film as well as they are here! Hemoglobin is by no means perfect but it's a proper film that takes a bit of time with its charactets and situation. I'm really surprised at all the poor ratings, this was much better than I was expecting! CW: child murder reference, bad soundtracks
This is a quietly transgressive horror that attempts to capture the unnerving atmosphere of the small town with a secret trope by copying better media (that soundtrack is either Goblin watered down or Angelo Badalamenti ruined by electric guitars). Notable for repeated moments of child murder and a gloriously fucked up ending, but fails to deliver on any of the hints at character development or setting development from early on. Also, it's kinda boring visually. Like, super boring. Even the fucked up goblins.

More than ten or fifteen years ago I heard about this film thanks to actor Roy Dupuis (someone here will know was him?) since La Femme Nikita is one of my favorite TV series and when I first read the synopsis the truth was a bit scary to me (but wow, I was a teenager in those years) and I don't know why I lost track of this film, I forgot about its existence completely, but thanks to a cousin I remembered again and decided to watch it last night.

So Bleeders / Hemoglobin comes from the writing team of Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett (Alien, Total Recall), based on the Lovecraft story The Lurking Fear. I have immense respect for both men, and have to think that the village idiot finally breaking her status as mute to exclaim: "No Fucking Way!" ...suggests that the finished product might not reflect the script they sold.

The Bleeders are inbred blood-sucking goblin monsters who live underground. Dr. Rutger Hauer is performing an autopsy on one when a guest stops by, and right away Dr. Hauer is like “Get a look at this thing’s dick and balls! And underneath, a vagina! Pretty cool, right?” And I was like, damn, this movie is PRETTY COOL. I didn’t care much about the suffering lead guy, a pale, non-deformed, Bleeder descendant, but I did like the decision he makes in the end, and it was cool when he ate a fetus, so maybe I actually judged him too harshly for his sub-Subspecies demeanor. All the townspeople were great, too, but the adorable Bleeders make the film. This lived up to the infamous VHS cover with a squishable blood packet over the grotesque faces! I wish it had sequels.

This has great New Brunswick fishing village atmosphere and a couple good moments peppered throughout its running time, but it really failed to grab me otherwise. You can kind of tell that the Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett was re-written because there's a decent idea for a horror movie here but it feels somehow mismanaged or over-written to me.
Rutger Hauer is alright, nothing to write home about though honestly. It's generally a well put together movie for the most part but it's just kind of whatever once you get past the shock-value of the concept and the solid effects can only take you so far.
