Nicole Brenez in 2007 wrote a little booklet (Cinémas d'avant-garde) for Les Petits Cahiers. At the end is a very useful viewing list of what she considers to be significant avant-garde works. It's biased towards Francophone films, especially in the later decades, but in general much more international than most such lists. Here it is in rough chronological order.
