I was watching Adrian Lyne's directorial debut Foxes [1980], and I was surprised to learn this was a contemporary take on Louisa May Alcott's Little Women — complete with all the teenage hijinks of the 1980s, so very unlike the source material. I wondered how many other films out there are contemporary retreads of literary classics. This list is an effort to dig deep into that question. It omits film adaptations that take place within the same period as the literary original.
