This third film from director Andy Mitton is another winner. Just like his previous films, he is able to craft some genuine scares and just like We Go On, there’s a genuinely emotional story with very likable characters. I think it could have used a little more backstory about the witch herself and I wouldn’t mind seeing a prequel sequel about that.
I find myself seeking out movies lately that keep it around the 90 minute mark and this one moves along at a nice pace.
A quiet supernatural thriller, with some high tension/suspenseful scary moments. I loved the portrayal of the father & son relationship, it was kind of perfect. The underlying themes in the narrative seemed to be about attachment, & letting go. I enjoyed watching this - it was also somehow comforting.
A more adequate effort than we go on. But still boring and not scary at all. Slow burn with another disappointing ending. The most redeeming quality was the father and son's acting and on screen chemistry. Ima pass on any future Andy Mitton projects.
this was surprisingly touching and not at all what i was expecting going into it. there are so many horror films that focus on how terrible the relationship is between a parent and their child, and while the boy's relationship with his mother isn't that great, the father-son relationship here was really nice. frankly, i'm jealous. this was also a lot more unnerving than many horror films i've seen. if you can get throught the extremely slow start, you'll be rewarded.
I found myself with a reserved interest in The Witch in the Window based on the lowkey trailer, and having been a bit disappointed with writer/director Andy Mitton's previous feature We Go On. Far from a bad movie, it just had a distractingly low budget look and it struggled to stick its loftier concepts in the end. This does however mark Mitton's first feature without co-writer/director Jesse Holland, who worked alongside him on both We Go On and YellowBrickRoad (a movie I enjoyed more, though it too botched its final moments). So my curiosity was piqued to see if he alone could bear the weight of a film.

Simon and his prepubescent son Finn (Alex Draper & Charlie Tracker) depart to the countryside to renovate a picturesque country house that Simon has purchased with the plan being to flip it for a profit upon completion.

I feel like this is a drama movie camouflaged as horror. And you won't notice it before it makes its move. Catch you off guard and shoot you point blank. And with its zen mood yet unsettling atmosphere, it will give you goosebumps and make your heart ache back and forth.

I was not ready for that. A masterpiece.
I LOVE everything about this film. The father son relationship is wonderful. The look at the world we created (and our desire to escape it) is powerful in a subtle way. The existential dread mixed with hope is fucking beautiful. The performances are so human and likeable, even though the characters are struggling. And the scares are HORRIFYING.
I will watch anything Milton puts out. I really liked We Go On and I still need to see YellowBrickRoad, but this film puts him in another league entirely. A new classic.
Sometimes I Can't Believe It's Not Hooptober Comes Back!
Really enjoyed revisiting this film. I can't help but feel it's very underappreciated. In a swift run time it juggles such a complex array of emotions, inciting sadness, comfort, and terror through incredibly genuine characters and performances, and an ever mounting sense of tension. The finale gave me chills like it did the very first time.
