It’s like Chicken Run (2000), but not nearly as good.

10-year-old me is really happy right now. Every generation deserves a Chicken Run.

The animation is very vibrant and fun and really something special, but that doesn’t stop this film from feeling redundant and slightly unrewarding. Oddly enough, the lack of something “frightening” here, the way the first film had a darker tone and dirtier feel, hold this film back. Feels like we lost the unique charm of the original.

I wanted to love this. The first Chicken Run was a transformative film in my youth and so maybe I’m a little more sympathetic to this movie’s pitfalls. Which isn’t to imply it’s horrible, it does start to cook towards the second half— glimmers of classic Peter Lord/Nick Park start to shine through. 

Hilarious that even in a Chicken Run movie, Zachary Levi has no chemistry with anyone on the screen, so it makes sense why the best parts of this movie are when his character is sidelined.

Not the best work from Sam Fell or the talented people at Aardman, but I suspect most will find it harmless.
