1. Despite the date, spooky season is never truly over in my house. I'm a huge horror fan, so please indulge me by watching a horror movie that is not overtly Halloween-related.
2. I'm currently working on my MSW and would love to be a school adjustment counselor in a high school. Watch a movie set in a high school. Bonus points if an adjustment counselor, guidance counselor, or school therapist is featured (bonus bonus if they're actually helpful).
3. When I'm not doing grad school things, I work some nights at an inpatient psych unit. Watch a movie where a mental health hospital is featured or one with a hospital scene at night. Bonus if it mainly takes place at the hospital during the night.
4. My girlfriend, Kate, and I love to watch movies together. I've kept track of all that we've watched with the affectionate tag, butt 1. Watch a movie that we've watched together. (Shoutout to her for helping me come up with prompts!)
5. I love listening to comedic movie podcasts, especially How Did This Get Made? where Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, and Jason Mantzoukas watch movies that are bad/bonkers. Watch a movie that they've done on the show.
6. In addition to How Did This Get Made?, Paul Scheer also hosts a podcast with Amy Nicholson called Unspooled where they watch good movies. They have watched all the movies on the AFI Top 100 list and have narrowed it down to create the API (Amy and Paul Institute) List. They're still working towards expanding the list to 100, but watch a movie on the current API List.
7. Today is the amazing Joni Mitchell's birthday! Watch a movie featuring a song of hers. This list may help.
8. Today is election day in the US! Watch a movie involving US politics or an election.
9. I grew up in the Greater Boston area and still live here. Watch a movie set or filmed in the Greater Boston area.
10. Video games have been a really important part of my life since childhood. Sadly, there haven't been many good video game movie adaptations. Watch an adaptation of a video game or a movie where video games are central to the plot.
11. The other day, I discovered the "themes" under the "genres" section when you go to a movie's page on Letterboxd. Go to your favorite movie's page and watch a movie that shares one of the "themes."
12. Independent movie theaters are so important for the preservation and celebration of cinema. Find your nearest indie theater and watch something they're showing! Here's a map that may help you find one near you if you're in the US. If there isn't one near you, then see a movie at any theater, or, if you can't make it to any theater, look at what is showing in a theater and then watch it online.
13. Providing a local theater with your patronage is great. So is doing so to a library! Lots of libraries also allow you to borrow movies, so if there is a library with movies near you, go there and borrow one. If there aren't any libraries near you, then watch something on a free streaming service, such as tubi. Some libraries also give you access to kanopy which has free movies for library card holders.
14. One of my favorite shows is Taskmaster, which is a British show that pits comedians against each other in a series of weird and fun tasks to win a bust of Greg Davies' head at the end of the season. Watch a film featuring any contestant that has been on the show. Here's an extremely helpful list.
15. For the next few, I'm going to talk about my family! My family is Brazilian and today is an important day in Brazilian history. On November 15th, 1889, the Emperor of Brazil, Dom Pedro II, was removed from power, and the First Brazilian Republic was formed. Interestingly, Dom Pedro II didn't really care or resist and essentially treated it like it was his retirement. Watch a Brazilian film.
16. My mom's favorite movie was Misery, and she loved reading Stephen King. Watch a Stephen King adaptation.
17. My dad is currently in love with The Blacklist and won't watch anything else. Watch a film featuring James Spader.
18. My older brother has had a huge influence on my movie tastes. While we were growing up, we loved watching Hong Kong thrillers and martial arts movies together, and our favorites were the Police Story series, Kung Fu Hustle, and Hard Boiled. Watch a movie directed by Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow, or John Woo.
19. In addition to horror, crime thrillers and murder mysteries are another two of my other favorite genres. A lot of my favorite ones are either South Korean, Japanese, or Italian giallo films. Watch a Korean or Japanese crime thriller or an Italian giallo movie.
20. Let's lighten things up a little! New Zealand has established itself as a great source of fun witty comedy over the years. Watch a comedy from New Zealand.
21. Watch a movie starring someone with the same first name as you. If you have a unique first name that would make this difficult, then look for someone whose name begins with the same letter as yours.
22. I am a DJ at WPRB 103.3 FM. Watch something involving radio (it does not need to be the main focus). Here's a list with some options that could be helpful.
23. Let's keep the music going! Watch a movie where music is an important part of the story.
24. Today is Thanksgiving in the US. Watch a Thanksgiving movie. That being said, my family has a history of watching a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings movie on Thanksgiving. If you have a tradition of watching a certain movie every Thanksgiving that is unrelated, then that counts too.
25. After Thanksgiving comes Black Friday. Watch something that mainly takes place in a mall or a store.
26. Alright, let's take a stab at that watchlist. Sort your watchlist by shuffle and watch the first movie in your list with a poster that has green as a main color.
27. It's Bruce Lee's birthday! In honor of the iconic martial arts master, watch one of his movies.
28. Continuing the birthday vibes, Mary Elizabeth Winstead's birthday is today! She's one of my favorite actresses and scream queens. Watch one of her movies.
29. Everyone has their guilty pleasure movies, and the Fast and Furious movies are mine. Watch a movie in the series, or, if you've seen them all, watch something featuring a member of the main cast of the films (Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Gal Godot, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, The Rock, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Bow Wow, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Charlize Theron, or Kurt Russell).
30. I hope you've enjoyed the hunt, but all good things must come to an end. Watch a movie about something ending. This could mean the ending of a relationship, job, school, or a phase of someone's life, for example.
