Daily Horror Scavenger Hunt 9 – March 2019 Day 3: Mermaid horror.

Feels like an American remake of a J-Horror movie in which they happen to be speaking Russian. Apparently the title of this movie is just a bad translation. She's not a mermaid, she's a Rusalka. So that makes more sense. But it could've been just some generic ghost too for all the time actually spent in or near the water. The last half hour was a slog to get through. I was tired but this movie kept going and going. Well past the part of the movie that actually felt like the ending. So yeah, pretty disappointed that I didn't get a cool killer mermaid movie, but also not even a movie that does anything interesting with a piece of folklore that I wasn't familiar with.

Simples, coeso e interessante, The Mermaid: Lake of the Dead nos mostra que, de fato, não é preciso grandes produções para contar boas histórias. Embora tenha uma duração curta, o longa possui ótimas atuações e consegue se explorar totalmente em seu objetivo de nos mostrar a versão russa das clássicas sereias. Claro, ele tem certos defeitos que o limitam bastante, mas, como um tudo, o filme consegue ser realmente bom.

This has some great production quality, but is pretty boring. Also, not a mermaid! This is a Russian film about a ruskala, who what lots of undefined powers.

None of the characters are likable and it's kind of funny to see the lengths they went through to hide the dubbing for the international markets.

Is it really too much to ask for a good mermaid horror movie?

The Mermaid – Lake of the Dead nimmt es zwar nicht ganz so ernst mit seiner Treue zur titelgebenden Meerjungfrau, die hier mehr wie ein Wassergeist wirkt, denn eine Meerjungfrau im klassischen Sinne. Dennoch gibt die Thematik vor allem optisch einiges her, und gerade die kalten, blaugrünen Filter, die die stimmungsvolle Szenerie wie ein Leichentuch bedecken, sorgen für ein äußerst stimmiges Seherlebnis. Zudem ist der Film beinahe durchgehend von einer knirschenden Spannung durchzogen. Letztlich bleibt zu sagen, dass sich Regisseur Svyatoslav Podgayevskiy in The Mermaid – Lake of the Dead bei wirklich allem bedient, was das Genre so hergibt, aber aus diesen Zutaten einen schmackhaften, düsteren Horrorstreifen mit Fantasy-Aspekt zusammengebraut hat, der sich durchaus sehen lassen kann, wenn man nicht genug von dem Genre bekommen kann.

Lembro que assisti no cinema quando eu tinha 16 ou 17 anos, a única coisa que eu lembro é que achei a melhor obra cinematográfica da história… o senso crítico de centavos.

Pelo menos as cores e a fotografia são bem bonitas.

"Marina... there's somebody under there."

This is another one that has its moments, but unfortunately is also struggling with an uphill climb from the very first scene. If you call your film Mermaid, but just have an angry ghost girl with bad teeth instead of what's easily recognized as a mermaid, it's really going to be difficult to keep your audience on your side.
