Cassavetes made ‘Gloria’ as a favor of sorts to Gena Rowlands; she had a yen to play a titanic character portrayed as an independent, gritty, sexy stalwart. When it came time to film, however, she had trepidations about her ability to authentically represent the population of willfully-childless women. She wanted believability above all else, and despite the suspension of reality present in the narrative, Rowlands gives a fully-realized, complex, convincing performance.
