If you're looking frantically for a movie where Nicole Kidman gives the most hateful hand job in the history of the cinema, I've got good news.

Nobody is talking about Sebastian Stan.

As usual, minimal screen time, but he's magnetic as ever; his chemistry with Nicole Kidman: sizzling; his badass, brooding demeanour: a ticking time-bomb. Nicole is good, but we all know by now she doesn't need a silly wig/distracting makeup to bring a great performance.

If you're familiar with Kusama's eccentric résumé, this is the combo breaker; with Destroyer, she settles for a cop thriller (light on the thriller) that's slow and uninteresting. 

Sadly, it's been done before and done better.

Are we certain this wasn't written and directed by Nic Pizzolatto?

“you can be better than me”

this ain’t it. the story felt really inaccessible and the stakes were too low to keep the tension. when it kicks up a few times i’m almost fooled, but loses me again soon afterwards. nicole builds a great character, but as the movie’s beating heart, she just barely keeps this thing alive. i might like it a little more when i’m in a different mood, but i highly doubt i’ll rewatch this any time soon

Female 4 Front: Action! Kusama, The Complex Destroyer

If there’s something you can’t say this movie lacks, it's effort. Nicole is putting on the look and bringing some of the mood and she does the best she can to sell you on the character, whereas Karyn brings the grit, and the score does its best to heighten the tension.

Unfortunately, a lot of these efforts go to hell, mainly because a bit of a convoluted and pretty boring script. It’s perhaps a little too brooding and serious for its own good; it really lacks enough suspense to be a tense thriller and not a lot of fun to make it entertaining.

All in all, it has its moments, but it’s a little too long, meandering and ultimately, it wastes a lot of its talent.

SEBASTIAAANNSNSNSBSBJSWJB i’m so obsessed with this man please for the love of god stay in the goddamn box i will rip my hair out (!!!) i’m a white man’s whore so obviously when i say this movie has "amazing visuals" i'm actually referring to every time sebastian stan is on screen (which admittedly isn't enough) & if i rated this so highly it’s only because of him, give me a break i’m only human (!!!) i just can’t explain his magnetic field or the way he makes me feel thingsssss. seeing him in THAT GODDAMN HAIRSTYLE made me feel like i snorted at least twelve lines of cocaine i’m genuinely concerned for my well being. & side note, i do think that he’s an incredible fucking actor who should be in everything, including me.

i understand that the storyline with her daughter is supposed to give her a richer interior life but jesus christ it was insufferable

The editing was so unclear at times. It came off as a TV movie. The directing left me wanting more. But then it was not all bad, as Nicole Kidman acts the heck out of it. She is in Monster-esque makeup, though, which is sort of distracting. I was underwhelmed, but a couple of people I talked to raved about it. To each their own.
