I know we’re going to read pandemic parallels into a lot of stuff that doesn’t really have it but this is the most COVID movie yet. It shot last July and it’s really about loss, isolation, and an uncertain future.
More importantly, it’s a reminder of how good Aja is in confined spaces and how incredible Laurent is every time.
OH that third act reveal... mon dieu! (full review can be found here! merci)
ariana grande once famously said "just keep breathin' and breathin' and breathin' and breathin'"
Melanie Laurent is so good. Most of this movie is spent watching her wriggle around in a sci-fi casket, and it's great.
A taut single-location Netflix thriller about a woman (Mélanie Laurent) who wakes up in a futuristic cryogenic chamber with no idea of who she is, why she’s there, or what she can to get out before she runs out of air, Alexandre Aja’s “Oxygen” would seem to be the perfect COVID-era collaboration between the directors of “High Tension” and “Breathe.” The rare high-concept movie that grows more compelling as it begins to unveil its mysteries, the film plays out as a frantic game of 200 questions that hinges on Laurent’s character desperately asking the chamber’s ultra-advanced A.I. companion (voiced by Mathieu Amalric) to sift through social media and make a few last-ditch phone calls. Anything, she hopes, that might restore…
Alexandre Aja just keeps getting better! Oxygen is effective, well-paced, well-executed, kept me guessing, and I was at the edge of my seat the entire time. It's definitely the director's best work to date, and it's so interesting to see him take on a different kind of thriller. Can't wait to see what he does next!

A woman wakes in a cryogenic chamber with no recollection of how she got there. As she's running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare.
Oxygen is an extremely effective claustrophobic Thriller that takes that concept to new heights by implementing a SciFi spin. It is essentially up to Melanie Laurent to carry this one, and she is incredible. Her fear and anger translates so well, and we are perfectly placed in her shoes during every painful moment. The other winner here is Alexandre Aja who once again works well within the genre he is tackling, but he is also able to…
