So, I am aware of the late Jane Goodall being a famous world renowned chimpanzee expert, but I have no idea about how her actual observation was actually being done. Seeing her not only tracking and observing these animals in the wild, but actually interacting with them even playing with wild chimpanzees was totally surprising to me. This movie is part nature documentary, and part family home video, filmed by Jane's collaborator/then husband Hugo Van-Lawick.
The newly restored footage looks great, from scenes of a chimpanzee family in the jungle, amazing wildlife footage from the Serengeti, to the various scenes of Jane and her family/team working in Gombe. Quite touching at times, and an interesting look at how wildlife studies and how people view/understanding of animals changed over the decades.
Watched this on Nat Geo's official YouTube channel. Really nice that they make these freely available nowadays.
