I feel like making a 100+ tweet thread about all the stupid things the characters in this movie do. It's just kind of unbelievable.
To start with, there's the Blair Witch-alike setup that doesn't quite make sense, as Kate (Natalia Warner), apparently some kind of... YouTuber? maybe?... decides to take a trip to Japan with her boyfriend James (Brandon Sklenar) and her best friend Christopher (Logan Huffman). The boys are instantly suspicious of one another in a way that might make for a potentially interesting horror movie dynamic but which no actual human being would think was a good idea.
Anyway, it turns out Christopher has "just picked up" speaking Japanese, so when the awkward trio arrives in Tokyo and…
Welp... this was certainly a movie that happened. Some nice cinematography, but this was not for me.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Uhmmm like we all knew that little boy wasn't real. How dare you try to reveal that as a twist.
Screenwriter Simon Barrett swings and misses hard without an Adam Wingard to keep him in check as evidenced by Temple, a poorly directed, nonsensical, boring horror film full of tired cliches, amateur performances, and cardboard-cutout characters making idiotic decisions.
I don't actually think the first half of the film is super terrible. It's not good, but the lead character is acted well enough and has enough interesting parts to keep the film from being boring. The setup is generic and the other two leads are boring beyond belief, but the first half is grounded and structured well enough that it wasn't too much of a miserable experience.
However, about thirty seven and a half minutes in, a certain scene occurs which involves the lead filming the other two having sex, and this marks the super rapid decline of the film. The rest of the movie is filled with absolutely mind numbingly bad decision making, a deteriorating quality in the…
An American Greaseball in Japan
Three friends travel to Japan and stumble upon a book that leads to a forbidden temple. And of course, even after all the warnings, they have to see it for themselves, because: AMERICA!
Surprisingly more Japanese than I expected; I was waiting for it to go full American, but there were always subtitles popping up. It's kind of obvious what's gonna happen, but had enough interesting visuals and creepy designs to keep me interested (Japanese village and all). Honestly didn't give two shits for the Americans, but everyone (and thing) around them kept me invested.
Ending was a bit of a let down, leaving more questions than answers, but at 78mins, there wasn't much to complain about. Worth it for the scenery and creature designs, but that's about it.
Always great to see Naoto Takenaka; he'll always be that funny teacher who couldn't quite play the sax to me.
The fact I was actually excited for this movie disgusts me, let me jump right into what's wrong with this movie. It's cliched as hell the whole movie is filled with cliches you have seen 30 times already, the acting was about as investing as a cardboard cutout. The writing led to many plotholes which by the way were never fixed. Another huge problem with this movie is pretty much nothing happened throughout this movie, oh yeah and the movie tries to be Blair Witch at the beginning for whatever reason (oh I'm sorry because one of the main characters it's a youtuber.) The only thing I can give this movie is the filming which was actually pretty decent, it's too bad everything else bombards it and completely ruins it as well. Overall Temple is definitely one of the most cliched movies of the year and definitely one of the worst, definitely stay away from this one....
