Tessa Thompson and Lily James play sisters. Lily James' character is in a huge slump and Tessa Thompson's character is a parolee trying to make good. Lily James dresses way down and goes for a non-glamorous look as does the makeup-less Tessa Thompson for the most part. It's definitely something I've wanted to see more of in the past: women directors don't have the male gaze, so they don't fetishize women and they don't always have to look beautiful or be in makeup (or rather they can still be beautiful without makeup). This doesn't always work in this case, but it's a nice change.

Beautifully, beautifully acted and told, Little Woods is a gorgeous little movie that manages to pack a rich plot into a character-driven drama. It’s always so painful to watch people put themselves at risk while knowing it’s what they think is right.
These sisters are far from greedy, craving nothing but stability in their lives, yet that goal couldn’t be more difficult to achieve with such a rocky starting point. Tessa Thompson’s Ollie, in particular, tries so hard to do things the right way, but it’s just not enough to keep her afloat. I was fully invested in this story, even in the bits where it started to drag. Dark as it may sound, there was a rare optimism to this that was so refreshing to see. It always felt warm.

I really enjoyed this movie; I think it was such a great character study. I like seeing real problems that people face depicted in movies and this one did it very well. Struggling with money, with health care, with family - these are all such relatable issues and it felt so genuine in this story.
It did make me more anxious than I’d normally like though. Like, watching a superhero fist fight an alien or something can be nice because you can watch low stakes conflict and enjoy it. But watching a woman struggle to get enough money for an abortion is so real and upsetting to watch because the American healthcare system is worse than any villain someone could…

Desperation porn.
This is a good film with a depressing but well developed script and wonderful performances that ground the whole experience. I like the subject matter and the direction is promising. At times the film just feels almost too depressing and too much of a downer... it's almost nihilistic but if you can get through that there is a lot of promise and a lot to like here.
Tessa Thompson and Lily James.... yes you should watch it.
