1. NUMBER ONE. Watch a film with a one-word title.
2. Happy Ramadan! Riz Ahmed (new Oscar winner) has been using his platform to help amplify Muslim voices. Watch one of his films or one featuring another Muslim actor/actress.
3. Today is Find a Rainbow 🌈 Day. Watch a film starring an LGBTQ+ actor/actress
4. I am disheartened by the hate that Turning Red has garnered for showcasing the awkwardness of being a teenage girl. It was one of the few Pixar films that passed the Bechdel Test— where two or more women are featured and talk to one another about something other than men. Watch a film that passes the Bechdel Test
5. Continuing with the idea of friendship and teamwork, my favorite action or sports films have a whole sequence about putting the team together or reuniting the gang. Watch a film with one of these montages (some ideas here)
6. John Williams' scores usually make me smile. Watch a film that he scored.
7. On the other hand, there is Hans Zimmer with his sci-fi, corny '80s, and animated film scores. Watch one of the films Zimmer scored.
8. I am not the biggest film buff in my family. Watch a film that influenced Cass here
9. Today is the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards, watch any Favorite Movie nominee or winner.
10. After being a fan of Quentin Tarantino, I finally watched his debut film– Reservoir Dogs. Watch a director’s debut feature-length film. (some classics here)
11. I believe there is artistry in well done body horror and enjoy bloody gore and slasher flicks. Watch a film with excessive gore (some examples here). If you don’t have the stomach for that, watch a film with a body swap.
12. Many films become predictable, sometimes I want that comfort and sometimes I want to go “WTF!?” Watch a movie with a plot twist, I hope you don’t get spoiled and I’m sorry if you do.
13. There have been films that have shook me (tragic, mind-bending, existential etc) and I haven’t been able to watch them again. Watch a film that I, someone else, or even yourself have only been able to watch once (my list).
14. Having grown up in California, many movies don't get it quite right. Watch a film that takes place or was filmed in your state (or township/province/territory/country).
15. Chag pesach! Happy Passover. Watch a film by a Jewish director (that isn’t Woody Allen)
16. Edgar Wright, James Gunn, and Quentin Tarantino are some directors who create the soundtrack before finishing the script. Watch a film with a now famous soundtrack.
17. Watch a film where you never learn a main character's name.
18. Ridley Scott’s films are known for beautiful world-building, strong female protagonists, or state of the art practical effects. Watch one of the films he directed or one of the sequels/spinoffs.
19. Judd Apatow’s films represented peak comedy for a solid ten years. Watch one of the films Apatow produced.
20. Happy 4-20! The legend goes that California stoner high schoolers would go get high at 4:20 after school, 420 became a code for smoking. So it is now the unofficial day of the ganja. Watch a stoner flick or a film where the characters get high. Feel free to light up 🔥💨 in celebration as well.
21. Watch a movie about gambling or centering on a bet.
22. Happy Earth Day! Watch a film where nature is its own character or motif.
23. To avoid substituting to make room for a new release, go watch a 2022 release.
24. To avoid certain heartbreak, watch a film where the pet/animal companion doesn't die
25. Many actors and actresses have been nominated or won an award for portraying a disabled character when they are not disabled. Watch a film starring a disabled actor or actress.
26. As a person with dwarfism, I grew up hearing the word “m--t”* thrown around in my favorite TV shows, books, and movies. Then there’s “oompa loompa,” “Dopey,” and “munchkin”. So, watch a film with a little person/LP who is playing a human with a speaking part and a normal name. Some films can be found HERE.
27. Bong Joon-ho famously said “Once you overcome the one inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” Watch a foreign language film, preferably from a country you’ve never seen any films from before.
28. Watch a Best Documentary Feature Oscar nominee or winner.
29. Many of my now favorite films happened to be released in 1999, making it my favorite year in cinema. Watch a movie from 1999.
30. Many films get a sequel. Then only some get a third. Watch the third film in a series/trio.
