near-future sci-fi, grounded sci-fi, low-key sci-fi, low-stakes sci-fi, indie sci-fi, low spectacle sci-fi, slow-burn sci-fi, naturalistic sci-fi, soft sci-fi, cerebral sci-fi, … whatever it’s called it’s good.
Usually science fiction movies with one or more of these dimensions:
— low-budget or indie (usually, out of necessity, means low-spectacle)
— low-concept (prioritizes character-depth and subtle nuances over an attention-grabbing premise)
— soft sci-fi (prioritizes emotion & relationships over scientific accuracy or explanation)

I used to call this list “Brit Marling sci-fi” because she is the queen of this genre.
Basically, these movies take traditional sci-fi elements like aliens, a.i., clones, time travel, space travel, apocalypse, dystopia, etc. to tell deeply personal & intimate stories about humanity.
basically just good sci-fi … (e.g. Ted Chiang, Ken Liu, Kazuo Ishiguro, Ursula K. Le Guin, Margaret Atwood, early Black Mirror, Twilight Zone)
