This challenge took from January 8, 2022 to December 6, 2022. The average score I gave for this challenge was a 3.6
The biggest surprise was Werckmeister Harmonies. To be sure, I interpreted it completely differently than what the director actually intended but I was surprised by the fact that I was able to interpret it the way I did and thus I enjoyed it as a deeply moving film about finding hope in the worst of times despite how it was intended to be something brooding and nihilistic. The biggest disappointment was Hard to be a God. It sounded so good. It sounded so good. But the actual execution is terrible. It’s this disgusting and meaningless exercise in boredom. I was hoping for something grand and epic and exciting. Instead I got one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. It’s not just the biggest disappointment of this challenge, it may be one of the biggest disappointments I’ve ever seen.
Top Three:
1. Silence
2. Werckmeister Harmonies
3. The Slender Thread
Bottom Three:
1. Hard to be a God
2. Vitalina Varela
3. Subarnarekha
Other Superlatives:
Best Performances: Elizabeth Hartman in A Patch of Blue/Andrew Garfield in Silence
Worst Performances: Madge Bellamy in White Zombie/Laurence Harvey in A Dandy in Aspic
Most Beautiful: Silence
Most Thought-Provoking: Werckmeister Harmonies
Made Me Cry: An Oversimplification of Her Beauty
Most Fun: Office Space
