This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
There's a scene in this movie where Helen Mirren tells a bunch of ghosts "go to your rooms" like she's grounding them, and the ghosts listen.

review creds to Tyler
Not the incompetent boring train wreck I was led to believe, Winchester is slick looking—taking an incredibly intriguing setting and filling the screen with plenty of nice visuals and haunted house atmos... plus Helen Mirren does her best to elevate the material because she’s a damn queen.
Jason Clarke is solid, the jump scares are ok, but the real draw here is Mirren and the Mansion... seeing it filled with around the clock workers constantly tinkering away at the weirdo architecture was a nice touch—this house and it’s story are definitly interesting. Definitely not the incompetent shithouse I was expecting, it’s solidly directed and put together but I can’t help but feel like it promises more than it delivers.
Helen Mirren roaming around a mansion in mourning attire is a big mood.
Helen Mirren, you’re doing fabulous sweetie.
Spierig Brothers, y’all better skedaddle.
Winchester really isn't as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be.
Although it tends to rely a bit too much on jump scares, the story is quite engaging and it does include some genuinely creepy sequences.
Helen Mirren is excellent as always and seems right at home dressed in Victorian mourning attire, while Jason Clarke is solid as the leading man.
It's certainly not the best haunted house tale out there, but it's far from the worst.
I'm giving this a 1/2 star more than Jigsaw (same directors), just because the violence wasn't (as) gratuitous. I read the bad reviews yesterday, but...I knew I liked Helen Mirren. Poor Helen Mirren. She should have received the script and told these guys, NO WAY! I AM A REAL ACTRESS. WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!
Instead, she made this movie more feasible than it would have been. But it's still so messed up and dumb. There are "supernatural" elements, but the "ghosts" are just so ineffective. I hope to never see another movie directed by The Spierig Brothers again. And I probably won't, unless they direct a Coen Bros. script or something.
I visited the actual Winchester house in 2011. One does not ever forget the Winchester house. It's an awesome place and if any subsequent movies are made about it, I hope that it is awesome as the house itself.
This is the 133rd film I saw with Movie Pass.
I had a good enough time with Winchester. I'd heard of the house itself before, and the concept of it certainly interests me. While I liked the idea of trapping spirits in rooms of a mansion, though, it wasn't something that I felt was explored to its fullest potential. Despite a handful of overhead and tracking shots, the house didn't really feel as vast as it should've. Even with budgetary constraints, there were far more compelling ways to cover this that were not chosen. Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke do help to anchor the piece, though, even against the backdrop of ugly ghosts and some awful wigs. Nothing all that special or even scary, but the gun aspect did make for an interesting angle of an otherwise dry story.
