In this BBC anthology adaption of the Charles Dickens short story, a traveling stranger happens across an isolated train signalman who is tending his post in the rural English countryside. As the men get to chatting, the signalman, splendidly portrayed by Denholm Elliot, gradually opens up about his growing sense of paranoia surrounding several supernatural occurrences that he has experienced on the job.

This bite-sized, dialogue-driven ghost story is well-crafted and unexpectedly chilling! It’s the perfect length for the story being told and does an excellent job building atmosphere and cultivating a palpable air of mounting unease and dread.
