Slow West
★★★ Watched

'She does not waste words. They tumble out. Wit following wisdom'

'East what news?
Violence and suffering. West?
Dreams and toil'

'In a short time this will be a long time ago'

Very disarming title because while this embraces western tropes it is anything but slow. The shooting start from the jump, with a Hateful Eight like cast of rogues, jaunty score and a bittersweet if too modest story. My favorite of the characters is arguably the least violent in Herr Werner the granola-bar skedaddling anthropologist.

'Birds will only sing to their own kind. Why not place a mirror in front of it?'

All establishing nature shots and characters hidden behind curtains and flickering light. Some of these images are pretty, but the plot and characters are so flimsy that this slow burn Chinese period soap opera is nearly impossible to follow. Who is the lady in the gold mask? What’s the deal with the white beardo into origami?

PS. For a better movie about a lonely bluebird, check out Rio.

'I'm one of those people that is not supposed to be a mom. I'm not a mom, I'm not. This isn't what it's supposed to be what its like, this can't be it'

'At this point I don't even know what to refer to you as, I'm just gonna call you female'

The only relaxing moment in this 2hr descent into maternal horror-anxiety is Conan deadpanning about guillotining rats. The stressed out mom plays all the hits -- wine, sweets,…

'Well that's disappointing, this means you're just another Jewish politician'

'There's only one woman in the world, one woman with many faces.'

It is hard to imagine Scorsese making this a decade after Life of Brian and thinking he could escape that legacy. Between the stonings, messiah debates, demanding mom, Dafoe's occasional sly grin, and Keitel's atrocious acting, outrageous wig, thick Brooklyn accent, and voicing Aslan the desert lion, Monty Python could hardly have done any better. The runtime eventually…
