This is a coming-of-age period piece set in 1950s Mayaro County, Trinidad, based on Michael Anthony's 1967 novel of the same name. We follow soft-spoken fifteen-year-old Shellie (Sudai Tafari) as he navigates adolescence while dealing with jealousy, expectations, and his father's illness. My grandmother is from Trinidad (albeit the other side of the island), and it was great to see a period piece set in the world she grew up in. Outside of the dramatic moments near the end (which were sudden but not unexpected), this film felt like a warm hug on a summer day to me, though the pacing did drag at times.
