Vai, water, is what connects the seven island nations in this eight-part anthology film directed by nine women, and is also our protagonist. We follow different incarnations of Vai (or Sevaia, Vai Mo'ui, Vaelusa, Vaisea, Sevai, Rapuwai) across a full, colourful life. Not all of the segments were hits for me, but my favourites were the Solomon Islands fishing story and the final triplet from Samoa/Niue/Aotearoa. I enjoyed this quite a bit, and it was very cool seeing Pacific Islander women telling their stories in their own languages.
